Area roundup: Cardinals softball team falls to Knights
PREP SOFTBALL
LCWM 5, FAIRMONT 1
LAKE CRYSTAL – The Fairmont Cardinals fell to the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Knights Friday 5-1 in a nonconference softball game.
Brylee Miller took the circle for Fairmont, giving up eight hits and five runs through six innings, while having the team’s only RBI. Gwyneth Schultz went 1 for 3 on the day for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals, now 6-3, host Windom in a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday.
USC 6, MCW 2
WELCOME – The Martin County West Mavericks were defeated by United South Central Friday, 6-2, in a nonconference softball game.
Hannah Rosenberg went 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Cami Clow went 1 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Mavericks. Emily Anderson went 3 for 3, while Addi Wohlhuter went 1 for 3. In the circle, Maddie Carlson struck out eight through seven innings.
MCW is now 6-3 and hosts Cleveland for a 4:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.
GIRLS GOLF
Fairmont girls take 6th in New Prague
NEW PRAGUE – The Fairmont Cardinals girls golf team placed sixth after shooting a 401 in a meet at the New Prague Trojan Invite Friday. Holy Family Catholic won the meet with a score of 343.
Leslie Zarling shot a 90 to take 11th place, while Carly Gustafson placed 24th, shooting a 99. Katherine Zelaya shot a 104 for 30th, while Joslyn Meyer finished 37th with a score of 108. Kailyn Miller took 41st after shooting a 110.
The Cardinals’ next meet is at 4 p.m. in Redwood Valley on Monday.

Bucs girls take 2nd in home invite
BLUE EARTH — The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers girls placed second in the Buc 6 invite Friday at Wilson Fields, while the boys placed fourth. Also participating was Granada Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther, which finished sixth for both boys and girls, and Martin County West, which placed fifth for both boys and girls.
BEA’s Jacob Grandgenett finished first in the boys 100-meter dash, running a 11.37, while teammate Jose Salinas placed fourth (11.74).
Londyn Bowers of the Jaguars placed first with a time of 13.31 in the girls 100, while MCW’s Ava Thate placed second (13.36).
In the boys 200 MCW’s Bear Kosbab placed first running a 22.96, while Grandgenett took second (23.27).
MCW’s Evelynn Christenson took first in the girls 800 with a time of 2:39, while teammate Braelyn Borchardt took third (3:06.9).
In the boys 1,600 BEA’s Oliver Ankeny placed fourth with a time of 5:52.60.
MCW’s Maddison Lyon took third in the girls 1,600 with a time of 6:59.5.
Brody Cook of MCW finished third in the boys 3,200 with a time of 12:34.9.
Katelyn Kennedy ran a time of 14:51.1 in the girls 3,200 to place second.
BEA’s Marcus Eckles finished second in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.58.
Eckles also took third in the boys 300-meter hurdles running a 44.10.
The MCW team of Kosbab, Lucas Larson, Kale Larson, and Josh Roben placed second in the 4×100 with a time of 46.18, while the BEA team of Gage Barker, Eckles, Jose Salinas, and Grandgenett placed third (46.19).
On the girls 4×100 the BEA team of Kyannah Brandt, Iree McKay, Mikayla Becker, Breanna Hefner-Roggeman placed first with a time of 57.70, while the Jaguar team of Ashley Singleton, Norah Chase, Cecilia Nowicki, and Londyn Bowers placed second (57.8). The MCW team of Thate, Avery Sanders, Thea Larson, Tayavia Maokhamphio placed third (58.2).
In the boys 4×200, the MCW team of Lixon Forsberg, Mason Menssen, Lucas Larson, and Kale Larson finished third with a time of 1:41.3.
In the girls 4×200, the BEA team of Brandt, Grace Schavey, Grace Nelson, and Hefner-Roggeman placed first with a time of 1:59.4, while the Jaguar team of Singleton, Chase, Nowicki, and Bowers took second (2:01.5).
The MCW team of Roben, Kale Larson, Lucas Larson, Hayden O’Connor, and Kosbab took first in the boys 4×400 running a 3:48.2.
In the girls 4×800, the BEA team of Aubrey Woodwick, Caitlin Eitzman, Sidney Eitzmann, and Emerson Weir took first with a time of 11:16.50.
Taylor Ripley of BEA placed second in the girls shot put with a throw of 29 feet, 6 inches, while MCW’s Mylee Larson took third with a throw of 28 feet, 3 inches.
In the girls discus Jaguar Lynsi Salic took first with a throw of 84 feet, 6 inches, while MCW’s Mylee Larson took second (82-10). Addison Sill of the Jaguars took third (81-11), while Ada Ziegler of BEA took fourth (76-5).
Tailor Douglas of BEA placed first in the girls pole vault clearing 8 feet, 9 inches.
Kyannah Brandt of BEA placed first in the girls long jump clearing 14 feet, 3.25 inches, while teammate Mary Dohm took fourth (12-6.5).
In the girls triple jump BEA’s Sarah Dohm took third with a jump of 29 feet, 3 inches, while teammate Sidney Eitzmann took fourth (28-6.75).
BEA’s next meet is at 4:30 p.m. at Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial along with the Jaguars on Tuesday, and MCW heads to St. James for a 4 p.m. meet Tuesday.
