TRUMAN — The Granada-Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars won both games against the Martin County West Mavericks in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division baseball doubleheader Tuesday night.
The Jaguars won Game 1 by a score of 4-2 and took the second game 16-2.
“Our pitching and defense kept us in it. Our bats finally woke up a little bit,” said Jaguars head coach Jordan Petschke. “Big two-out hitting finally comes through to score a few early. And pitching and defense really just kind of the main points again to secure the win.
“The bats finally arrived a little bit [in Game 2]. We were selective at the plate. We got our fair share of walks. Griffin Studer, like Carson Hastad, the first game threw a lot of strikes, forced contact. Defense was playing well behind them both. And again, Game 2 is a lot of clutch two-out hitting, good base running, and aggressive base running. We got up and we kept up.”
Leading the Jaguars in Game 1 was Griffin Studer who went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a home run, while Bryce Borkenhagen went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Landon Schneider went 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Elliot Flohrs went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Pitching for the Jaguars was Carson Hastad, who struck out five through seven innings.
In Game 1 for the Mavericks, Jerry Olson went 1 for 4 with an RBI, and pitching Lucas Larson struck out 3 through four innings.
The top of the first inning was a quick one for the Jaguars, who retired the side, throwing only three pitches. However, despite getting runners on base, the Mavericks’ defense held strong, getting the third out and stranding two on base.
Opening the second inning, Maddex Faber lined one to right field to give MCW their first base runner of the inning. The Jaguars got two outs before Jacob Wilmes singled on a ground ball to second base, putting runners at the corners, but a ground out to short kept the score at 0-0.
The Jaguars’ offense got rolling in the bottom of the second inning. Back-to-back singles put runners in scoring position when a ground ball sent to short by Elliot Flohrs brought in the first run of the night. Landon Schneider sent a fly ball to center for an RBI double that put the Jaguars up 2-0 before MCW could get out of the inning.
The Mavericks loaded the bases in the top of the third inning, but the Jaguars’ defense held firm, not giving up a run as they left the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Jaguars’ offense kept rolling thanks to a leadoff solo shot by Studer to left field that put the score at 3-0. The Mavericks’ defense did not allow another run in the inning.
The Jaguars retired the side in order, with a strikeout, groundout, and pop out, giving the offense a chance to extend the lead. Flohrs hit a leadoff double on a fly ball to second base, followed by a line drive double from Borkenhagen to center field, bringing in a run that put the Jaguars up 4-0.
The fifth inning was a defensive stalemate. Both teams got a runner on but were unable to put anything on the scoreboard. The sixth inning followed the same trend as the fifth; both defenses held strong, and neither allowed a run.
The Mavericks tried to rally back in the top of the seventh inning. Wilmes took first after being walked, followed by Noah Meixell driving a ball to center to put runners at first and second. Pytleski popped a ball high in the air that allowed the inning’s first run to score. Olson singled on an RBI single on the ground to short that made the score 4-2. The Jaguar defense stopped the skid and secured the victory.
In Game 2 the Jaguar offense came alive. After an exchange of runs in the second inning, things sat tied at 1-1, but three consecutive five-run innings by the Jaguars locked in the second victory of the night.
Leading the Jaguars in Game 2 was Borkenhagen, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Studer went 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Talin Thate went 1 for 1 with two RBIs, while Hastad went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Browan Sill went 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Studer took the win on the mound, striking out six through five innings.
