Cardinals clinch win over New Ulm in season opener

BOYS TENNIS

FAIRMONT 4, NEW ULM 3

NEW ULM – The Fairmont Cardinals beat New Ulm four matches to three in a Big South Conference battle Tuesday, with the win being decided in the final match.

Fairmont and New Ulm tied in singles play 2-2, with Anthony Stegge beating Charlie Weidman 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match, while Tyler Slama beat Ian Schotzko in the No. 2 singles 6-1, 0-6, 6-1. Zachary Ashland fell to Dan Brownfield in the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-0, while Leander Nelson fell to Isaac Dittmer in the No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-0.

Dominick Lund-May and Wylee Frederiksen defeated Nicolas Del Castillo Diez and Eli Dorschner in the No. 1 doubles 6-1, 7-6, 7-4, while Oliver Thedens and Simone Castro fell to Wyatt Feucht and Thomas Lehne 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Lilly Ortega and Jonah Vetter beat Ben Groebner and Britton Beran 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 doubles match.

Fairmont’s next matchup will be against Southwest Minnesota Christian Thursday at 4 p.m.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

ST. JAMES – The Martin County West Mavericks finished seventh with a score of 35 for the boys and 32 for the girls, while the Granada-Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars finished eighth with a score of 23 for the boys and 16.5 for the girls at the St. James Invitational #2 Tuesday evening.

In the boys 100-meter dash, Berent Kosbab of MCW finished third with a time of 11.88.

Ava Thate of the Mavericks finished fourth in the girls 100 meter with a time of 14.09.

In the girls 1600-meter race, MCW’s Evelynn Christenson finished third running a 5:59.9.

Vaughn Thompson of the Jaguars took fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 19.5, Thompson also finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles running a 47.71.

The team of Kosbab, Kane Wohlhuter, Lixon Forsberg, and Mason Menssen of MCW finished third in the boys 4×100 relay with a time of 49.89.

MCW finished fifth in the girls 4×100 the team of Tayavia Maokhamphio, Avery Sanders, Ava Thate, and Thea Larson, posting a time of 58.87.

Barret Scholl of MCW finished third in the boys shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 8.5 inches.

In the girls shot put Jaguars’ Lynsie Salic finished third with a throw of 31 feet, 1 inch.

Scholl finished fifth in boys discus for MCW with a throw of 96 feet, 6 inches.

Londyn Bowers of the Jaguars cleared 4 feet, 6 inches in the girls high jump for fourth place.

Jacob Mattson of the Jaguars finished fifth in the boys triple jump, clearing 35 feet, 8 inches.

The Mavericks next meet is at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Maple River and The Jaguars head to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial for a 4:30 p.m. meet also on Tuesday.

PREP BASEBALL

CLEVELAND 12, MARTIN COUNTY WEST 1

CLEVELAND – The Martin County West Mavericks were defeated by Cleveland 12-1 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference baseball matchup Tuesday.

Leading the Mavericks was Preston Cepress, who went 1 for 3 with one RBI. Brenan Ringnell went 1-3 with one run scored.

MCW (1-1) will head to Madelia Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. game.

BOYS GOLF

GHEC/T/ML 173, FAIRMONT 190

FAIRMONT – The Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars defeated the Fairmont Cardinals boys golf team 173-190 Tuesday at Rose Lake.

Leading the Cardinals was MacKlain Anderson who scored a 46 and shot one par, finishing third, while Hudson McKean finished fifth, shooting a 47 with one par. Jalin Jackson shot a 49 with three pars which locked in seventh place.

Leading the Jaguars was Gavin Kester who took first shooting a 36, while Landon Zimmer finished second shooting a 40, and Jevin Garry shot a 46 for third place

Fairmont’s next meet is at 1 p.m. in Worthington on Friday.

BLUE EARTH AREA 165, MARTIN COUNTY WEST 215

ELMORE- The Martin County West Mavericks fell to Blue Earth Area 165-215 Tuesday at Minn-Iowa Golf Course.

Kale Larson led MCW with a score of 45. Knox Larson was seventh overall with a score of 49. MCWs next meet will be against Madelia Thursday, 4:15 at the St. James Country Club.

Leading the Buccaneers was Jackson Blondin who shot a 37 for first place, while Cole Becker shot a 42 for second place. Eli Blagg and Manny Granillo tied for third shooting a 43.

GIRLS GOLF

FAIRMONT 199, JAGUARS 232

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Cardinals girls golf team defeated the Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars Tuesday 199-232 at Rose Lake golf course.

Katherine Zelaya shot a 47 landing in first place with two pars, while Leslie Zarling had a par shooting a 47 to tie for first place.

Leading the Jaguars was Elsa Thompson who finished fifth after shooting a 55, while Charlotte Berhow and Meredith Miller tied for seventh shooting a 58.

Fairmont’s next meet is at 10 a.m. in Marshall

BLUE EARTH AREA 201, MCW 275

ELMORE – The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers defeated the Martin County West Mavericks 201-275 Tuesday at the Minn-Iowa Golf Course.

Leading the Buccaneers was Katelyn Storbeck who finished first shooting a 43, while Madison Ehrich took second shooting a 44. Mckinley Hanson and Reese Olson tied for third shooting a 57.

Leading the Mavericks was Brenna Heifner and Clare Paulson who both shot a 67 for ninth place, while Aaliyah Bolstad shot a 70 for ninth place.

MCW’s next match is against Madelia at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
