Area roundup: Cardinals boys hockey secures playoff win

FAIRMONT 4, WORTHINGTON 3

WORTHINGTON – The Fairmont Cardinals had an explosive second period Tuesday to propel them past the Worthington Trojans 4-3 in the first round of the Section 3A playoffs.

Scoring in the first period was Klay Beemer, assisted by Gavin Kester. The second-period scoring was done by Eric Determan, assisted by Tyler Kurt. The second goal of the period was scored by Kegan Roloff, and Determan scored the final goal for Fairmont in the second.

Goaltender Kaden Olson saved 32 of 35 shots on goal in the win.

The Cardinals head to Mankato West for a 5 p.m. second-round game on Thursday.

ST. ANSGAR 55, NORTH UNION 47

ST. ANSGAR, Iowa – The North Union Warriors girls basketball team fell to St. Ansgar 55-47 in a Class 1A, Region 4 playoff game Tuesday night.

Leading the Warriors was Ainsley Ulrich with 18 points and five rebounds, while Shallie Walders had 11 points and seven rebounds. Maisey Bierstedt had 9 points and eight rebounds, while Alexis Cummins had 7 points and six rebounds.
