Area roundup: Jaguars hold off USC
GIRLS BASKETBALL
JAGUARS 70, USC 64
NORTHROP – The Granada-Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars defeated United South Central 70-64 Monday night in a nonconference girls basketball game.
Leading the Jaguars was Harley Geistfeld with 19 points, two rebounds and four assists, while Keira Benck had 17 points and four rebounds. Addison Nowicki had 12 points and two rebounds, while Madison Lewis had 11 points and six rebounds.
The Jaguars host Windom for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday.
MCW 48, MAPLE RIVER 38
MAPLETON – The Martin County West Mavericks defeated Maple River 48-38 Monday night in a nonconference girls basketball game.
Leading the Mavericks was Emily Anderson with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Maddie Carlson had 7 points and 10 rebounds. Ivy Olson had 6 points, while Courtney Anderson had 5 points and three rebounds.
The Mavericks (20-4) head to Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s for a 7:15 p.m. game on Thursday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
USC 68, JAGUARS 65
WELLS – The Granada-Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars fell to United South Central 68-65 in overtime Monday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.
Leading the Jaguars was Bryce Borkenhagen with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Eli Jensen had 15 points, five steals and four assists. Jackson Madsen put up 13 points and 10 rebounds on the night.
The Jaguars (9-12) head to Alden for a 5:45 p.m. game on Thursday.
GIRLS HOCKEY
LUVERNE 6, FAIRMONT 1
LUVERNE – The Fairmont Cardinals fell to the Luverne Redbirds Saturday in the Section 3A semifinals.
Scoring the lone goal for Fairmont was Halyn Haycraft assisted by Alexis Haycraft, while goaltender Alexis Sundeen had 41 saves.
