Area roundup: Fairmont girls secure overtime win

GIRLS HOCKEY

FAIRMONT 3, PRINCETON/BIG LAKE/BECKER 2

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals girls hockey team held off Princeton/Big Lake/Becker 3-2 on Friday night in a nonconference girls hockey game.

Alexis Haycraft led the scoring for the Cardinals with two goals and an assist, while Lauren Bettin had a goal and an assist and Kynlee Beemer had an assist.

Fairmont (5-3) will host Luverne at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

BOYS HOCKEY

REDWOOD VALLEY 4, FAIRMONT 3 (OT)

REDWOOD FALLS — The Fairmont Cardinals boys hockey team found itself on the wrong end of an overtime game for the second night in a row with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Redwood Valley Cardinals on Friday night in a Big South Conference game.

Fairmont dropped an overtime game to Windom Area on Thursday at home.

Redwood Valley outshot Fairmont 37-28 in shots on goal, with Fairmont goalie Kaden Olson collecting 33 saves.

Eric Determan, Klay Beemer and Macklain Anderson each had goals for Fairmont, with Tyler Kurt adding two assists and Determan adding one.

Fairmont took a quick 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the opening period with goals from Determan and Beemer before Redwood Valley added a goal in the first period and two more in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Anderson’s goal at 9:34 of the third tied the game up and eventually sent it to overtime, where Thomas Fischer scored the game-winner for Redwood Valley.

Fairmont (0-8) head to Luverne at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

MCW 62, MAPLE RIVER 52

TRIMONT – The Martin County West Mavericks (9-3) defeated Maple River (2-11) 62-52 in a Tomahawk-Valley, Valley Division girls basketball game Friday night.

Leading the Mavericks was Emily Anderson with 46 points and nine rebounds, while Emily Schettler had 8 points and four rebounds. Courtney Anderson had 6 points and six assists.

The Mavericks head to Mountain Lake at 6:15 p.m. on Monday for the next game.
