Hackett hits seven 3s, Cardinals top Knights
MANKATO — Joseph Hackett hit all seven of his shots, all 3-pointers, on his way to 21 points to lead Fairmont to a 71-51 win over Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial on Friday, sending the Cardinals to Saturday’s championship game of the Kwik Trip Holiday Tournament.
The Cardinals will next take on Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at Bethany Lutheran College for the Kwik Trip tourney title. That game is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. tipoff Saturday in the North Gym at BLC.
Hackett hit six of his seven shots in the first quarter, coming one 3-pointer shy of tying the school record for 3-point shots made in a game.
Also for Fairmont, Logan Junkermeier had 15 points, while Oliver Tordsen had 11 points. Harman Schrunk added 10 points.
The two teams battled closely early as they worked to get the ball into the post. An interesting chess match ensued, as Fairmont’s Junkermeier (6-foot-9) and LCWM’s Carter Lowis (6-foot-7) battled for position down low. Junkermeier got the advantage early, hitting a floater to put the Cardinals up 22-17. LCWM passed well to get around the Cardinals’ zone defense but was unable to cash in on many shots from behind the arc.
Fairmont’s Tordsen (6-8) and Trevor Maakestad (6-6) covered for Junkenmeier when he got pulled out to the 3-point line. Meanwhile, Hackett caught fire from 3-point range, hitting his six 6-point shots to put Fairmont up 38-32 by halftime.
Fairmont’s size continued to be an advantage in the second half, while other Cardinals shooters began hitting shots from range as well. Maakestad made a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the second, and Fairmont pulled away steadily for the rest of the game. A putback dunk by Tordsen made it a 67-51 game, and subs were sent in with 1:28 to play as Fairmont put the game away.
