Three Mavericks highlight 2024 All-Sentinel Volleyball team
FAIRMONT – The high school volleyball season has come to a close for The Sentinel’s area schools and the 2024 All-Sentinel Volleyball Team has officially been selected, honoring some of the area’s top players.
Martin County West is coming off of a solid season thanks to a strong trio of players, including senior hitter Emily Anderson, who had 297 kills, 366 digs, 24 assists, and went 95.7 percent serving with 27 aces. Alongside her was junior setter Emily Schettler, who put up 18 kills, going 94.2 percent serving with 13 aces, 556 assists and 238 digs proving to be dominant not only serving but setting up her teammates to drive the point home. Sophomore hitter Maddie Carlson put up 240 kills and went 90.1 percent serving with 35 aces, showing an efficient serve that more often than not found the scoreboard. She also had 376 digs for the year.
“Emily Anderson has been a varsity player for four years, a great leader, a very versatile player,” said MCW head coach Kayla Zehms. “Emily [Schettler] is a great setter always looking to get better and works hard, happy to have her again next year. Maddie’s hard work really turned it on to a whole new level this year. Competitive and great leader.”
Blue Earth Area Buccaneers senior outside hitter Autumn Gordon was chosen to this year’s team after ending her final season with 234 kills, averaging 3.7 kills per set. She also had 10 ace serves and 344 service receptions. Defensively she put up 18 blocks and 206 digs to add to an already impressive season.
“Autumn is the true definition of a competitor,” said Buccaneers head volleyball coach Donna Nawrocki. “She has the athleticism and drive to help her team in many ways. From having five games with 20 or more kills to eleven games with 10 or more digs, her offensive and defensive play along with her vision and drive were an asset to her team.”
The Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars saw sophomore outside hitter Londyn Bowers lead the way with 285 kills, 274 digs, 19 solo blocks, 10 block assists and 10 set assists. She also went 246 for 300 serving with 35 aces for the season, closing out arguably her best season yet.
“I feel she had one of her best seasons,” said Jaguars head coach TJ Williams. “Considering she has been on varsity since eighth grade. As a major role player and she is becoming a leader on the court and off for us she has a never quit attitude toward the game.”
The Fairmont Cardinals’ junior outside hitter Brylee Miller showed her ability to be effective regardless of where she was on the court this year, putting up 180 kills and 315 digs. She also had a 86.4 percent serving percentage with 20 aces, 24 blocks, 14 block assists and 18 assists.
“Brylee is an extremely versatile player,” said Fairmont head coach Elizabeth Lowry. “She makes a difference in any position on the court. She was influential for our offense and made key plays on defense. She led us in multiple statistical categories and was a leader on the court.”
The Sentinel Volleyball Player of the Year will be revealed this weekend.
