MANKATO — Maree Zimmerman netted bookend goals to cap the Mankato West Scarlets’ 4-1 nonconference hockey victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Thursday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato.

Keara Flanagan converted a double-assist from Karissa Newville and Maia Goerndt into Fairmont Area’s only goal during the second period to spoil Mankato West goaltender Paige Olinger’s shutout bid. Trailing 3-0 after one frame, Flanagan found the back of the cage with a shot just 1:23 into the middle segment.

Zimmerman cashed in a pass from Claire Roering only 1:18 into the first period to stake the Scarlets to an early 1-0 advantage.

Tori Tosch then tallied the first of Mankato West’s two power-play goals at the 10:04 juncture of the opening frame. Tosch connected for her twine-finding shot off a double-assist from Maleah Giesen and Marleigh Jordan.

Jordan then traded roles and collected a goal off a double-passing combination from Giesen and Tosch at the 14:42 mark for a three-goal lead for the home team.

Zimmerman accounted for the third period’s only offensive production by scoring a power-play goal off a double-assist from Anna Olsen and Emily Kane at the 12:29 juncture.

Fairmont Area netminder Ilana Moeller, who entered the game with 799 saves on the season, recorded a game-high 24 stops. Olinger turned away 15 shots by the Cardinals to earn the win for the Scarlets.

Fairmont Area (6-16) plays host to Austin at 7 p.m. Monday night in a nonconference game at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

Mankato West (10-12) travels to Windom Area on Saturday for a 1 p.m. nonconference game.
