FAIRMONT — For the second straight game, the Fairmont Area Cardinals boys soccer team needed a second-half comeback.

The Cardinals dominated the final 40 minutes to tie the St. James/Windom/Madelia Wings 3-3 on Tuesday at Kot Soccer Complex.

“We’ve become a second-half team, apparently,” Fairmont Area head coach Brady Meyer said. “We have to focus and be ready to play from the start. We have to play two complete halves, not just one.”

The Cardinals forced the tie when Angel Hernandez sent a corner kick that Gerson Revolorio converted into a goal with 12:43 remaining in the second half.

Theodor Myhre scored an unassisted goal at the 35:41 mark of the second half to cut the Wings’ lead to 3-2.

The Cardinals did not allow a shot in the second half, while finishing with four shots on goal.

The Wings started off strong, scoring a goal in the first minute of the game. Fredy Garcia Saquic picked up a loose ball off a defensive miscue 10 yards in front of the Cardinals’ goal and fired it home to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 39:02 mark of the first half.

A defensive miscue allowed the Wings’ Hector Vivas Montoya to pick up a loose ball, dribble in close and fired in a goal. The goal came at the 36:17 mark of the first half.

The Wings made it a 3-0 game when Edwin Luis Amperez scored another unassisted goal.

Myhre scored an unassisted goal with 6:49 left in the opening half to get the Cardinals on the board.

The Cardinals were stunned, trailing 3-1 at the half. The Wings had three shots on goal in the first half, while the Cardinals had only 2 shots on goal.

Meyer told his players they could dominate the second half, outshooting the Wings 9-0 in the final 40 minutes.

They had a chance to go ahead 4-3 with 10:43 left in the game. Hernandez sent a corner kick toward the Wings’ net. Revolorio got his right foot on it, but goalkeeper Erick Rodriguez made the save to keep it a 3-3 game.

The Cardinals also failed to score on a penalty kick early in the second half. Rodriguez made the save off the Revolorio shot.

The Cardinals (3-6-3) travel to Cannon Falls Saturday, while Wings United (1-7-1) host St. Peter at 7 p.m. Thursday in St. James.
