Cougars claw out narrow 1-0 soccer win over Cardinals
MANKATO — Ava Monson received credit for an own goal with 4:15 remaining in regulation to propel the Mankato East Cougars to a 1-0 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during nonconference soccer action Monday in Mankato.
Netkeeper Madi Stromberg generated a game-best 16 saves for Fairmont Area, which did not register a shot on goal.
Cougar goalie Ashley Fischer netted the shutout between the pipes.
Fairmont Area (2-9-1) travels to Madelia today for a 7 p.m. Big South Conference match against St. James Area/Windom Area/Madelia.
Mankato East edged Fairmont Area in the junior varsity game by a 1-0 decision on Monday in Mankato.
Mary Bennett made eight saves while handling the net-minding duties between the posts for the Cardinals, while teammate Addie Folkerts notched seven stops during second-half action.
Mankato East made a clean sweep of Fairmont Area as the Cougars scratched the Cardinals by a 5-2 decision in the C-squad contest on Monday.
Lianna Weber accounted for both of Fairmont Area’s goals on the game. Weber converted an assist from Lauren Zarling into the Cardinals’ initial net-finding shot. Weber later cashed in a pass from Ingrid Edman.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Lowry chalked up a game-leading 20 saves between the pipes.
