Fairmont Area soccer nets tie with Southwest MN Christian
FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Area Cardinals boys soccer team stormed back from a two-goal deficit in the second half to tie the Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles 3-3 on Thursday at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.
“It was nice to see us dominate and come back in the second half,” Fairmont Area head coach Brady Meyer said. “It’s not a win, but getting the tie and playing so well in the second half gives us some momentum heading into homecoming week, so that’s nice.”
Theodor Myhre scored each of Fairmont Area’s three goals, including the tying goal at the 12:57 mark of the second half to draw the Cardinals even. It came unassisted.
Myhre’s harmless shot was on net and turned out to be perfectly placed in the upper left corner, just over the outstretched hands of SWMC goaltender Logan Bleyenberg.
“It goes to show you it doesn’t hurt to put a ball on net,” Meyer said. “His shot was perfectly placed.”
Myhre scored at the 16:39 mark of the second half, assisted by Gerson Revolorio. That drew the Cardinals within a goal at 3-2 and they had all of the momentum.
The Cardinals led 1-0 on Myhre’s first goal. This one was came at the 28:33 mark of the first half, assisted by Jack Sadusky.
The Eagles scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 halftime lead.
The Eagles’ Aidan Schaap scored an unassisted goal at the 25:11 mark of the opening half to tie the game 1-all.
Caden Sas scored for the Eagles at the 7:08 mark of the first half to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Kade Fey drew the assist.
The Eagles made it a 3-1 game when Trevin Prins’ corner kick was headed into the net by Schaap. The header eluded Cardinals goaltender Jonathan Heinze. The goal came with only 81 seconds left in the opening half.
Heinze came up with two diving stops late in the first half to keep the Cardinals within striking distance.
The Eagles outshot the Cardinals 15-13 in the first half and 31-24 for the game. They had 12 shots on goal compared to eight for the Cardinals.
Heinze had nine saves for the Cardinals, while Logal Bleyenberg had five for the Eagles.
Fairmont Area (3-6-2) hosts St. James/Windom Area/Madelia at 7 p.m. Tuesday, while Southwest Minnesota Christian travels to Montgomery to play Tri-City United at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
