Becker powers Cardinals to 6-0 soccer triumph over Trojans
FAIRMONT — A hat trick, a shutout and a 28-6 shots-on-goal advantage filled Fairmont Area head girls soccer coach Matt Nielsen’s ‘prescription’ Tuesday night.
Kennedy Becker generated a game-high three goals and added an assist, while netkeeper Madi Stromberg only did not allow a goal, but earned a rare assist on Becker’s initial score to pace the Cardinals’ 6-0 Big South Conference win over the Worthington Trojans at Kot Soccer Complex.
“Everything we did in a positive manner is just what the doctor ordered, so to speak,” said Nielsen. “We’ve been struggling to find goals, we’ve struggled to stop shots, we’ve struggled to find good coaching from me.
“Hopefully, we can build off of this win to get us going in the right direction.”
Becker drilled a rising liner off the crossbar from the right point that Melia Menth alertly collected the rebound and tapped home the ricochet for a 1-0 Fairmont Area lead with 30:30 remaining in the opening half.
“It’s the shoes,” a grinning Menth said in reference to switching from blue spikes to a red pair on Tuesday night.
Karissa Newville then put her dark pink cleats to the task by lending a foot to two goals within a 20-second span to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 3-0.
Newville drove the right end line before delivering a crossing pass to Maia Goerndt for the right-post tap-in at the 24:27 juncture. Elayna Anderson then chipped a lofty pass to the quick-footed Newville for a twine-finding blast to the top right shelf at the 24:07 mark.
Stromberg then displayed her strong leg by launching a goalie’s outlet kick to Becker, who dribbled by the Trojans’ defense and lined a net-finding shot into the left top shelf for a 4-0 Fairmont Area lead with 14:20 left in the first half. Stromberg earned an assist on the play.
Becker then produced goals on both sides of intermission to complete her hat trick on the night. Becker intercepted a Trojan pass and hammered through the Worthington defense to nail a low goal for a 5-0 margin with 4:56 left in the first half.
Becker later took Frankie Martin’s pass and knocked home a low-skidding shot into the bottom right side of the net with 4:42 left in the second half.
Stromberg turned away all six Worthington shots on goal for a shutout, while Trojan goalie Karen Hser turned away a game-best 22 shots on net.
