Jaguars place 4th, Cardinals go 1-2 at Sleepy Eye Invite

SLEEPY EYE — The Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars captured fourth place, while the Fairmont Cardinals went 1-2 during pool play at the Sleepy Eye volleyball invitational on Saturday.

Lindsey Diegnau distributed 10 set assists and connected for one ace behind 7-for-7 serving to help guide the Jaguars to an opening 25-12, 26-24 victory over the Cardinals.

Brylee Miller topped Fairmont’s effort by smacking six kills, while teammate Grace Pendergast doled out nine set assists.

Danika Eisenmenger contributed seven digs to the Cardinals’ first-round effort, while teammate Nevaeh Rahm chipped in three kills.

Brianna Petrowiak tallied six kills to go with four digs for the Jaguars in the opener, while Keira Benck dished out four set assists and notched three aces on 9 of 11 serving.

Londyn Bowers generated three kills and three digs for the purple-and-white, while Bethany Petrowiak and Madisen Lewis delivered four and three blocks, respectively.

Host Sleepy Eye downed the Jaguars in second-round action, 25-19, 25-14.

Lewis topped the Jaguars with three blocks to complement 7 of 7 serving, while Bowers scooped up nine spikes.

Benck tallied one ace on 6-for-7 serving, Diegnau doled out five set assists, while Brianna Petrowiak made three kills.

Bowers delivered three kills and went 11 of 12 serving with an ace during the Jaguars’ 25-19, 25-14 final round of pool play win over Mountain Lake Area.

Diegnau and Benck each distributed six set assists, with Diegnau also connecting on 10 of 11 serving.

Brianna Petrowiak generated six kills, Ashley Singleton made 10 digs, while Lewis contributed five blocks and nailed one ace on 10-for-11 serving in Round 3.

Buffalo Lake-Hector defeated the Jaguars in final bracket action, 25-22, 25-8.

Singleton, Bowers and Lewis led the Jaguars’ defensive effort by producing nine digs, eight digs and four blocks, respectively.

Brianna Petrowiak nailed six kills, while Diegnau and Benck doled out six and four set assists, respectively.

Host Sleepy Eye then outlasted the Jaguars in the rematch for third place, 25-18, 17-25, 15-11.

Singleton went 11 of 11 serving to go with 13 digs for the purple-and-white, Diegnau served 13 of 15 and dished out nine set assists, while Bowers, Lewis and Sarah Matasovsky each slammed four kills.

Benck distributed seven set assists, Brianna Petrowiak tallied nine digs, while Olivia Mattson chipped in three blocks.

Fairmont utilized Miller’s seven kills and five digs to power past Mountain Lake Area in second-round pool play, 25-16, 25-27 via total points.

Pendergast doled out 10 set assists for the Cardinals, Mariah Moeller made six digs to go with three ace serves, Rahm chipped in six digs, while Ava Rodning added five defensive scoops.

Host Sleepy Eye squeezed out a one-point differential win in another split decision, 25-15, 16-25, in pool play.

Miller notched eight kills for the Cardinals, while Leslie Zarling doled out four set assists and connected on 6 of 7 serves.

Pendergast collected six digs, six set assists and went 7 of 8 serving, while Moeller made nine digs.

Fairmont (2-5) travels to Blue Earth Area tonight for a Big South Conference clash scheduled for 730 p.m.

The Jaguars (4-6) play host to St. Clair at 7 p.m. tonight in Granada in a Valley Conference match.
