BLUE EARTH — The Fairmont Junior Legion Post 36 baseball team swept its regular season series with the Blue Earth Area American Legion Post 89 team on Friday, winning 16-4 in a run-ruled five innings, at Veterans Memorial Field in Blue Earth.

“The biggest thing is we wanted to get good swings tonight, which we did,” Fairmont assistant coach Jared Pomerenke said. “We hit a lot of line drives tonight, which was good to see.”

“We’re improving with each game,” BEA head coach Jeff Bell said. “We hit the ball hard tonight and battled back a couple of times. It’s nice to see our kids finish with six hits and put some runs on the board.”

Fairmont scored in each inning. It sent 12 hitters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring six runs to set the tone.

Post 36’s highlights in the first were a run-scoring triple from Micah Vaughn, a two-run single by Kellen Fritz and a run-scoring walk with the bases loaded from Joe Hackett — who left the game in the second inning with an injury. The third hit in the first inning was a line drive single from Merritt Pomerenke.

In the second inning, Post 36 scored a single run. Nolyn Goerndt tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cole Wiemers.

Fairmont added three runs in the third inning. Vaughn had an RBI ground out, while Goerndt had a two-run single to make it a 10-0 game.

Post 89 stormed back and put its first two runs on the board in the bottom of the third.

Peter Fletcher doubled home Carter Rosenau and Hayden Veriede.

Post 36 scored two runs in the top of the fourth. One run scored on a throwing error and Goerndt singled home the second run.

Once again Post 89 battled back.

Drew Thomas singled and Dakota Mitchell walked to put two runners on base. A throwing error allowed both runners to score.

Fairmont scored its final four runs in the fifth. Connor Sanvig, Pomerenke and Dakota Wiley hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, driving in three runs, while Vaughn drove in another run with a line drive single to finish Post 36’s scoring barrage.

For Fairmont, Vaughn and Goerndt each had three hits to power the offense. Pomerenke had two hits, while Wiley, Fritz and Sanvig hat one hit apiece for Fairmont.

For BEA, Peyton O’Hara had a team-best two hits. Rosenau, Haugh, Fletcher and Thomas each had one hit for BEA.

For Fairmont, Pomerenke earned the win, pitching three innings. He gave up two runs — one earned — four hits, one walk and struck out four. Goerndt pitched two innings, giving up two earned — one hit, two walks and struck out three.
