After graduation, Mary attended Northwest Institute of Medical Technology and worked at the Trimont Hospital and later at the Fairmont Clinic as a lab and x-ray technician.
On Dec. 8, 1956, Mary was united in marriage to DeWayne (Swede) Winkelman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Galena Township. They lived on their farm in rural Ormsby and raised cattle and hogs.
Mary loved spending time on the farm with Max, her black lab, tinkering around the farm, gardening, bird watching, and mowing lawn. Fondest memories were getting together with her sisters and brothers and all the nieces and nephews for family gatherings. Mary and Swede loved to go to Lake of the Woods and stay at Morris Point Resort while fishing for walleye. They also loved spending time with their special friends Fran and Marlene Kettler in Arizona during the winter months.
Mary is survived by her son, Michael (Deb) of Victoria, Minn. and daughter Leah (Josh) Sandbo of Becker, Minn.; six grandchildren, Natalie, Darren, Lauren, Blake, Bennett, Nolan, and one great-grandchild James; sisters JoAnn (Robert) Hilgendorf of rural Trimont, Minn., Melanie (Richard) Hunstad of North Mankato, and Linda Winkelman of rural Ormsby; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
