Al was born on March 16, 1955, at Hill Air Force Base in Utah, to Valoris (Gaard) and Harold Nuessmeier. The family later moved to Austin, Minnesota, where he spent his childhood. He was the beloved brother of Danita Elton (Steve) and Jennifer Sandbeck (Doug).

While growing up in Austin, Al was confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He had a love for the arts and was active in local theater during high school and while attending Austin Community College. A talented athlete, he also competed on the varsity swimming team. Al graduated from Austin Community College with a degree in Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. Some of his fondest memories were family trips up north to Leech Lake, where they camped and spent cherished time with extended family.

On Oct. 21, 1978, Al married Paula (Boettcher) Nuessmeier in Blue Earth. They met in Mankato, Minn. — Al had just completed nursing school, and Paula was pursuing her passion in culinary arts. Together, they built a life filled with love, dedication, and shared purpose.

After settling in Blue Earth, Al and Paula raised three sons: Aaron, Joshua, and Jonathon.

He cherished his time between Blue Earth and the Boettcher family farm near Marna, where he shared a wealth of knowledge, values, and hands-on skills with his family. From gardening — especially vegetables, flowers, and house plants — to cooking, crafting, and helping at the Pumpkin Farm, Al’s presence left a lasting impression on those around him.

Al dedicated most of his professional life to caring for others, working as a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Blue Earth. His compassionate presence was deeply felt by colleagues and residents alike. He also served his community as an EMT on the local ambulance team for nearly a decade.

A devoted leader, Al volunteered with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for over 30 years. He gave countless hours to mentoring youth, teaching life skills, camping, and fostering values of service, curiosity, and self-reliance. His time as a scout leader was one of his proudest and most fulfilling roles.

Al was overjoyed to welcome his grandson, Jethro Paul Nuessmeier, born on September 26, 2024 — the son of Joshua and Kimberly Bormann — into the family. Jethro brought a new light into Al’s life, filling it with pride and joy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Paula; his sons, Joshua Nuessmeier (Kimberly Bormann) of Marna, and Jonathon Nuessmeier (Skye Coughlin) of Minneapolis; his mother, Valoris Nuessmeier; and his sister, Jennifer Sandbeck (Doug) of Waseca. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, John Lee Boettcher (Pat) of Blue Earth, along with many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Aaron Nuessmeier of Blue Earth; his father, Harold Nuessmeier of Waseca; his sister, and brother in-law, Danita and Steve Elton of Kasson; his parents-in-law, Donald and Irene Boettcher of Marna, his nephew J.J. Boettcher, his cousin Andy Leland; and several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2, at Patton Funeral Home in Blue Earth. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, also at Patton Funeral Home, with Rev. Carol Mapa officiating. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery at a later date.

Al’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering generosity will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
