Red attended Hartley public schools and graduated with the class of 1955. While in high school, he was a member of the FFA and was on stage with President Eisenhower while receiving an FFA award. Red furthered his education at South Dakota State University on an Agricultural scholarship.
On Oct. 24, 1961, Red enlisted in the Army, where he served with B Battery, 2nd Howitzer Battalion, 120th Artillery. He achieved the rank of E-3(T) before earning his honorable discharge on Aug. 6, 1962.
On June 27, 1964, Red was united in marriage to Meda Engel at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell, S.D. This union was blessed with three children, Tony, Becky, and Kathy. Red and Meda shared over 60 years together.
Red attended St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont, where he was active as a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
