Shirley J. Johnson

FAIRMONT — A Celebration of Life Service for Shirley J. Johnson, 89, of Fairmont, Minn. will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Shirley passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 19, 2025, at the Lakeview Methodist Healthcare Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Shirley Joann (Smith) Johnson was born Oct. 15, 1935, to Rex and Ethel (Harris) Smith in Palo Alto, Iowa. She attended four different high schools and graduated from Fairmont in 1953.

Shirley was united in marriage to Kenneth Johnson on Aug. 16, 1959, in Fairmont. They made their home in Fairmont. They were blessed with two children, Tim and Patty. Shirley worked as a telephone operator, attended beauty school and operated a home beauty shop. She worked at Armours in Fairmont until they moved to Lakeville in 1987, where she worked at Jostens until she retired in 1999, when they moved back to Fairmont.

Shirley was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont and a member of Circle. Shirley was a Girl Scout leader. Shirley enjoyed reading, playing cards, watching her grandchildren play soccer, baseball, basketball, football, dance, and riding their horses. She loved the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves. Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchild.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Tim (Brenda) Johnson and Patty (Todd) Monsen; grandchildren, Eric (Genevieve) Johnson, Meghan (Kevin) Hanson and Parker (McKenzie) Monsen; one great grandchild, Russell Kenneth Hanson; sister, Jean (Dan) Blowers; sister-in-law, Lorae Johnson; and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Johnson; her parents, Rex and Ethel Smith; her in-laws, Arthur and Bernice Johnson; as well as beloved brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, and brother.
