David M. Kruse

FAIRMONT — Memorial Service for David M. Kruse, 85, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held at a later date with military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. David passed away on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2025, at his home in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

David Milton Kruse was born on April 1, 1939, in Sauk Center, Minn. He was the son of Earl and Fern (Pew) Kruse. As a boy, he worked for the Sentinel Newspaper doing the paper route. At the age of 13, he also began working in a grocery store until he graduated high school. After graduating from high school, David enlisted in the National Guard on Oct. 12, 1957. He served with C Co., 13th BN, Infantry until earning his honorable discharge on April 11, 1958.

David then got married and had three kids. They lived in Mankato, Minn., for a time, and he worked at various grocery stores there. He then moved back to Fairmont and worked at Madsens for 19 years, Gunthers for the next 19 years, and lastly, he worked at Hy-Vee for 22 years until he finally decided to retire. David was a hard-working man who enjoyed helping and getting to know the customers. He worked all of the store, eventually becoming assistant manager of various departments, a night manager, stock crew manager, and lot manager. He could always be found with a smile on his face, inside the store or out in the parking lot, gathering carts and talking to customers.

Besides dedicating his life to his family, friends, his faith, and his work, David had quite the love for vintage cars! He owned many of them throughout his lifetime, and you could find him at all of the area car shows, most of the time bringing home a trophy or two. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, attending cookouts, celebrations, and trips with his kids. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s graduations and became a great grandpa before his passing. David always had a story to share, or a silly joke to tell. He had a very caring and light-hearted personality and loved his work and church families as well.

Left to cherish his memory include his stepdaughter, Debbie (Dusty) Bulfer (four grandkids and one great-grandson) of Miss.; Doug (Charlotte) Cecil (one grandchild) of Colo., brother of Randy and Robin; a son-in-law, Terry of Ore.; a daughter-in-law, Sue of Minn., nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Along with his parents, Earl and Fern Kruse, David was preceded in death by his one and only love, Arlene (Kruse) Cecil; infant son, Jeffrey Kruse; son Randy Kruse; daughter Robin (Kruse) Hamilton; and his sister, Linda (Kruse) Vander Hart.
