Darrell D. DeWar

FAIRMONT — Darrell Dean DeWar, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, sponsor, and friend, passed on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born to Bob and Dorothy DeWar, Darrell leaves behind a legacy of hard work, devotion to family, the triumph of sobriety, and a life filled with love.

Darrell was a devoted husband to Suzanne, his wife of 53 years, a proud father to his daughters, Andrea and Danielle, and a cherished grandfather to Bryce, Hadassah, and Malachi. He was a loving brother to Van (Laurie), Jeff (Karen), and Kathy (Rick Fey) and shared a special bond with his son-in-law, Corey. Darrell also treasured his relationship with his father-in-law, Harold, particularly their cabin projects, where Harold ensured from his chair that Darrell “got it just right.”

As part owner of DeWar Electric, a family business passed down from his father, Darrell worked with his family to build a lasting legacy. He balanced his commitment to the business with his love for the family cabin, tending to the yard with care, morning coffee runs, and enjoying golf outings.

Darrell’s journey of sobriety profoundly transformed his life, bringing him peace, clarity, and joy in his later years. During this season, his love for Suzanne deepened as they shared laughter and quiet mornings together, watching birds and squirrels from their chairs. It was also a time filled with cherished moments as a grandfather, holding and loving his grandchildren–an answer to prayer.

Darrell had always been a believer, but his faith became especially evident in his final season of life, leading others to God through his journey of sobriety. A friend in recovery shared, “Your dad brought me to God and showed me how to love others and how a dad was supposed to love a son.”

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Dorothy DeWar and brother-in-law, Steve Shane.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne DeWar; daughters, Danielle Freitag (husband Corey) and Andrea DeWar; grandchildren, Bryce Dean Ihrke, Hadassah, and Malachi Freitag; sister, Kathy Fey (husband Rick); brothers, Van DeWar (wife Laurie) and Jeff DeWar (wife Karen); and many other extended family members and dear friends.

On the morning of Darrell’s passing, a beautiful red and pink sunrise graced the sky, symbolizing the new life and resurrection he entered through Christ.

While his family grieves his loss deeply, they do so with hope, knowing Darrell is now in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

A celebration of Darrell’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Flowers are welcome at the funeral, but memorials are preferred to the Alano Society of Fairmont or Action169, organizations meaningful to Darrell and his family.

Darrell’s family finds comfort in the words of the Serenity Prayer, which guided him through his journey:

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.”

Darrell’s life reminds us that God’s amazing grace is sufficient for all, and his legacy of love, faith, and restoration will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
