Edward John Grewe

BIGFORK — Edward “Ed” Grewe, 79, of rural Bigfork, Minn. peacefully passed away while surrounded by family on Jan. 15, 2025 at Essentia – St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minn. Ed’s life was characterized by steadfast loyalty to family and friends, enjoyment of the great outdoors, and a strong work ethic that benefited his professional and personal life.

Ed was born on March 28, 1945 to Frederick “Fred” and Ann (Loos) Grewe in Fairmont, Minn. He married Joan “Joanie” Mary Byman on Nov. 28, 1970 in Browns Valley, Minn. and they established households in Fridley, Sartell, and Bigfork, Minn. during their 54-year marriage. They raised two children, Nicole “Nikki” and Todd, and worked their professional careers in central Minn.

Ed served his family, community, and country through a long and varied career that started early while working on southern Minn. family farms as a child, learning the carpentry and homebuilding trade through his father as a teenager, joining the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a young adult, and spending his entire professional career with Electrolux (or its corporate predecessors) in Saint Cloud, Minn. After a 43 year career, Ed retired from Electrolux during 2007 and immediately set his sights on retiring to Itasca County, Minn.

Ed was an extremely hard worker in the workplace from late childhood through retirement, but he identified mostly as an avid Minn. outdoorsman hunting birds in southern and western Minn., hunting deer in northern Minn., and catching fish on Lake of the Woods in western Ontario. Ed’s love for hunting started early, hunting deer as a young child on the Superior National Forest near Ely, Minn. through an affiliation with the Zupancich family during the early 1950s. Ed later transitioned to hunting deer on the Chippewa National Forest near Marcell, Minn. through an enduring six-decade friendship with Harold Boege that started during the mid-1960s. Ed was equally passionate about fishing Lake of the Woods and took great pride in a family-owned lakefront home near Minahico, Ontario (1972 – 2014) where he spent nearly every summer holiday with his father and two brothers fishing the waters surrounding Dawson, Bigsby, and Big Islands. He was a devoted father that taught his kids fishing, boating safety, water sports, and navigation on Lake of the Woods. After retirement, Ed achieved his lifelong dream of purchasing his final lakefront home near Bigfork, Minn. where he spent his final 12 years fishing, observing deer, spending time with friends and family, monitoring weather and road conditions, and watching the happenings on Horseshoe Lake.

Ed is survived by his wife, Joan “Joanie” Grewe, of Bigfork, Minn.; brother Richard “Dick” (Judy) Grewe of Talmoon, Minn.; sister-in-law Therese “Betsy” Grewe of Winona, Minn.; daughter Nicole “Nikki” (Todd Boris) Grewe of Juneau, Alaska; son Todd Grewe of Bigfork, Minn.; numerous beloved Loos cousins (greater Minn. and Ariz.); dear friends Harold and Joan Boege of Marcell, Minn.; and a large and caring extended Byman and Hanson family linked by marriage to Joan Grewe and located across Minn. and S. Dak. Ed was preceded in death by his parents (Frederick “Fred” and Ann Grewe, Fairmont, Minn.) and brother Fred “Fritz” Grewe (Winona, Minn.).

A celebration of life will occur on Lake of the Woods, Ontario during summer 2025. Ed’s final remains will be distributed across his favorite hunting and fishing locales including Lake Traverse (Browns Valley, Minn.), the Chippewa National Forest (Marcell, Minn.), and Lake of the Woods (Minahico, Ontario).
