FAIRMONT — Mass of Christian Burial for James “Jim” G. Pope, 74, of Fairmont, Minn., will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont with military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Inurnment will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Jim passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 16, 2025, at Ingleside Estates in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
James Glenn Pope was born on Dec. 30, 1950, in Mountain Lake, Minn., to Sidney and Joyce (Landsteiner) Pope. He attended school in Comfrey and Jeffers until moving to Fairmont in 1959. Jim graduated from Fairmont High School in 1970.
Jim enlisted in the Navy in June of 1970 and earned his honorable discharge in June of 1974. After returning home from the service, Jim started managing theatres for ABC Theatres in Mankato, Minn. He then went to work for Carisch Theatres in Mankato in 1976, and later in Winona in 1978. More recently, Jim managed the movie theatre in Owatonna until 1988.
On Jan. 2, 1982, Jim was united in marriage to Debra Bulfer. This union was blessed with two daughters, Jennilee and Katilee. The family moved back to Fairmont in 1990 where Jim worked various part-time jobs until 1993 when he started driving school buses for Minn. Motor Bus. He also drove special needs buses until his retirement in 2015.
Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Deb of Fairmont; daughters, Jennilee (Michael) Townsend of Fairmont, and Katilee (Aaron) Jones of Derby, Kans.; grandchildren, Trevor Rosburg, Lucas Rosberg, CJ Townsend, Jewelliann Eastwood, and Shelby Jones; great-granddaughter, Oaklynn Eastwood; siblings, Dale (Liz) Pope of Pawtucket, R. I., Barb Dettloff of Granada, Minn., Deb (Dallyn) Kotewa of Fairmont, Minn., Nancy (friend, Dale) Habben of Hartford, S. Dak., and Sandy (Paul) Furhman of Lake Benton, Minn.; sister-in-law, Julie Hill of Fairmont, Minn.; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Deb) Bulfer of Fairmont, Minn., and David Bulfer of Fairmont, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Along with his parents, Sidney and Joyce Pope, Jim was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Lawrence Schultz; parents-in-law, Don and Clara Bulfer; sister-in-law, Sandy Bulfer; and brothers-in-law, Ken Dettloff, and Jim Hill.
