Mary Ellen Mathwig

WOODBURY — Funeral Service for Mary Ellen Mathwig, age 85, of Woodbury, Minn., will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont with interment in Lake Fremont Cemetery in Dunnell, Minn. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. Mary Ellen passed away on Jan. 12, at New Perspective Senior Living, Woodbury. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary Ellen Mathwig was born on May 27, 1939, in Sauk Centre, Minn. Her family moved to Fairmont, Minn. and she graduated from Fairmont High School. She furthered her education at Mankato State University where she graduated with a degree in education and music.

On March 31, 1962, Mary Ellen was united in marriage to Roger D. Mathwig at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont. This union was blessed with two sons, Scott and Rick. Mary Ellen and Roger resided in Comfrey, Minn., from 1962 until 1970. They both taught at Comfrey schools until Roger was hired as an Insurance Agent for State Farm Insurance in Truman, Minn., where they lived until 2010. The couple later moved to Fairmont in 2010 and shared over 61 years together before Roger passed away in July of 2023. In Dec. of 2023, Mary Ellen moved to Woodbury to be closer to her family.

Mary Ellen taught English and was the choir director at Truman High School for many years. She retired from Truman High School in June of 1999. Mary Ellen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont. During her free time, she spent countless innings in the dugouts of baseball and softball games keeping score for the teams. Amazingly, she was able to keep score using a pen when most use a pencil and eraser. Along with enjoying traveling with Roger and going to Twins games. Mary Ellen also served as the choir director for Immanuel Lutheran Church for many years. She was involved in Ruth Circle, Coffee Club, and Lutheran Women in Mission (Women of Immanuel).

Left to cherish her memory include her sons, Scott Mathwig of Mound, Minn., and Rick (Kim) Mathwig of Woodbury, Minn.; grandchildren, Nathan Mathwig of Winona, Minn., and Joshua Mathwig of Woodbury, Minn.; sisters, Marlene Peterson and Karen Cox, brother Bob Parker, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Along with her parents, Albert and Esther Parker, Mary Ellen was preceded in death by sister Clarice Keith, brothers Don Parker, and Lee Parker; sister-in-law Patsy Parker; brothers-in-law Butch Schaller, Jerry Cox, and Bob Peterson.

Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
