David Lawton
LEDYARD — A funeral Mass for David Lawton will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5 at Divine Mercy Parish ~ Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Ledyard with full military honors conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Bancroft.
A soldier was born. David Harvey Lawton was born May 19, 1948, twin son of Reverend Norman and Hazel “Lorry” (Harvey) Lawton in Rochester, N.Y. He graduated from West Marshall High School in 1966.
Dave was drafted in 1967, and this began his military career. He served in the Army in Vietnam. He was an instructor for the Army Signal Corp at Fort Monmouth, N.J., and Fort Gordon, Ga. During a break in service, he moved to Fairmont, Minn. where he met Barb Nauman. They were married on Aug. 10, 1979, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont, Minn.
In 1982, he returned to military service and spent five years in the Navy at Jacksonville, Flor. He made a lateral transfer back to the Army and he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany for three years assigned to the third Armored Division. While there he participated in Desert Storm. Upon return to the States, he finished out his 20-year career at Fort Polk, La.
Upon his retirement from the service, he and Barb returned to Ledyard where he worked at several different jobs while being physically able. Dave enjoyed reading and golfing when able to. He enjoyed the yearly trips to Grand Marais, Minn. where they had honeymooned. The first year they went back was on their 25th anniversary and continued to do so each year thereafter.
Dave was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and an Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football fan. He was a member of the Ledyard Legion Post # 675, a member of the Knights of Columbus in Bancroft, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Barb of Ledyard; three sons, David (Heather) Lawton of Humboldt, Daniel Lawton of Forest Lake, Minn., and Dennis (Nicole) Lawton of Sherburn, Minn.; three brothers-in-law, Tom (Jane) Nauman of Grape Vine, Texas, Jim (Lori) Nauman of Blue Earth, Minn.; and Jeff (Joanie) Nauman of Haslet, Texas; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Nauman of Panora; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary Plath-Dreier, and her husband Charley; his twin brother, Don Lawton; his mother-in-law, Alice Nauman; and his brother-in-law, Darwin Nauman.
Dave passed away on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, at the age of 76, and reported to his final revile.
