Vernon A. Handevidt

FAIRMONT — A funeral service for Vernon A. Handevidt, 80, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will be prior to the service from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeview Funeral Home.

Vernon passed away Sunday, June 16, 2024, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont, surrounded by his loving family. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Vernon Andrew Handevidt was born Nov. 8, 1943, to Earl and Viola (Kable) Handevidt on a farm near Jackson, Minn. After his mother’s death, Vernon was raised by his uncle and aunt, Rudolph and Lena Simacek. He attended country school and then graduated from Sherburn High School. Vernon served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 28, 1967, until being honorably discharged on July 18, 1968. Vernon’s first marriage brought three children: Dean, Brenda and Brad.

Vernon was united in marriage to Sylvia Nutt on Feb. 14, 1970, in Valentine, S.D. To this marriage brought Todd and Angel. Also, joining our family, Dawn, Darla and Darron to complete our loving family of 5 children. They made their home in Fairmont before moving to Welcome, Minn. After his marriage to Sylvia he furthered his education at Jackson Vocational School and graduated with an associate’s degree in accounting/business and also an associate’s degree in architectural engineering. Vernon worked in the trucking industry for many years as he started trucking when he was 16 years old. Vernon and Sylvia owned and operated their own trucking transportation company for over 30 years until their retirement due to health reasons. Some of his most memorable jobs was hauling High Security military equipment being in places that people don’t even know exists as well as hauling the rockets for the space shuttle and having high security clearance to be able to do so. Once Vernon retired, he went out to South Dakota for three years where he enjoyed helping a farmer during the summer and fall.

Vernon was a member of the American Legion in Trimont, Minn. He was a Boy Scouts leader and helped coach Pee Wee baseball. Vernon loved camping, fishing, motorcycling, racing his own race car, watching NASCAR, his dog, Sparky and most of all being with his family, going on vacations. Vernon and Sylvia enjoyed traveling and seeing the United States and going on cruises to other countries. Vernon’s most treasured times were spending time with Sylvia and his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were treasured by him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sylvia Handevidt of Fairmont; children, Dawn (Dave) Hartung of Welcome, Darla (Steve) Preble of Breezy Point, Darron (Gloria) Morris of Scandia, Todd (Sue) Handevidt of Fairmont and Angel (Chuck) Brantner of Sherburn; grandchildren, Dustyn (Leah) Hartung, Dayton (Michelle) Hartung, Daylin (Taylor) Hartung, Kelsey (Houston) Eicher, Kyle (Luke Pavlovich) Preble, Zachary (Paige) Morris, Alexander (Brittney) Morris, Alexander Nguyen, Hunter (Cassie) Handevidt, Hailie Handevidt, Kennesey (Dalton) Brantner, Jaedon Erickson and Arianna (Riley) Brantner; great-grandchildren, Henry and Hayden Hartung, Kinley and Levi Hartung, Kingsley and Lily Morris, Baylen, Weston and Kennedy Morris, Baby Boy Eicher, Chloe Hoppe, Brantley and Laine Stevens, Braxston and Wyatt Albertson, Kyson Erickson and Ashlyn Brandenburg; sisters, Doris Huber of Sherburn and Alice Koen of Estherville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Joann Handevidt; brother-in-law, Billy (Kimberly) Cordt of Ariz.; stepfather-in-law, Bill Cordt; many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
