Lorna M. Baarts
TRUMAN — Lorna M. Baarts, age 84, of Truman, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm, Minn. A public visitation will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Zaharia Family Funeral Home in Truman. Following the visitation, a private family funeral service will be held. Lorna May was born March 26, 1936, in Fairmont, Minn., to Dietrich and Wilhelmina (Kruse) Laue. She attended school through 8th grade and then began working to help her family and her younger siblings. Lorna later would obtain her GED. On May 22, 1954, Lorna married Mearl Dean Baarts at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. The couple was blessed with six daughters and raised them on the family farm. Lorna was a hardworking woman and held many jobs throughout her lifetime. She cleaned houses, walked beans, worked as a waitress and cook at E & L Cafe, worked at the canning factory, and worked as a farm wife. She loved to spend time working on the farm. Driving tractors and the combine was Lorna’s favorite job. Lorna also enjoyed visiting, laughing, spending time outside, cooking, and baking. Lorna made homemade cinnamon rolls, bars, and cookies for her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her later years, Lorna loved to read. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Jean Liebenstein of Dundas, Betty (Scott) Wink of Truman, Bonnie (Keith) Skluzacek of Faribault, Sherry (Tom) Hansen of Truman, Dawn Baarts of Dundas, and Denise Baarts of New Ulm; 11 grandchildren, Jordan (Liz) Liebenstein, Jessica (Grant) Christensen, Jillian (Rick) Kuntz, Christina (Steve) Koedam, Leahet (Josh Conley) Wink, Charles (Emily) Skluzacek, Ben (Ashley Sanderson) Skluzacek, Kate Skluzacek, Adam (Shirly Abear) Hansen, Tony (Kendra) Hansen, and Cody Hansen; 14 great-grandchildren, Alex, Aiken, Gretchen, Gustus, Jocelen, Cowen, Maggie, Matthew, Morgan, Mia, Macy, Elliot, Deric, and Brynn; brother, Darvin (Anne) Laue; sisters, Lavonne (Rollie) Olson, Ardis (Duane) Lennartson, Karen Rossow; brother-in-law, Arlen Berhow; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Mearl Dean; son-in-law, John Liebenstein; brothers, Walter, Larry, and David Laue; sisters, Delores Dokken and Lois Templeton; sisters-in-law, Norine Baarts, Shirley Berhow, and Norma Laue; and parents-in-law, Wilhelm and Irene Baarts.
