Sherburn Council meets new officer
SHERBURN — The Sherburn City Council met on Monday evening. Chief of Police Trevor Yochim introduced the new officer, Jared Schafer.
Schafer explained that he is local and graduated from Martin County West and Worthington Law Enforcement Studies. He, his wife, and three boys live in Fairmont. Chief Yochim reported that 144 ordinance violations had been dealt with. He said a law enforcement day will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on May 13 at the Sherburn Elementary School. Cars from MRAPs like a SWAT or heat team, trucks will be present, and many interesting activities will be available for the education of the children about law enforcement.
Clerk Andrea Ballard reported a problem at the water plant again on Sunday, and the public works department was on the job much of the day. The water plant is up and running now. There seems to be a power draw problem when the generator kicks in. A chip was ordered and applied to no avail. The water plant was running now. There will be information on the problem on the city’s Facebook and website.
Clean Up Day is on May 10 in Sherburn, with Waste Management trucks picking up boxed and bagged items from curbs if the owner gets a flag from City Hall for $25 for each four-by-six pile of acceptable items. The truck will do a pick-up at 6 a.m., so residents should have the items out the night before or by 6 a.m. on May 10. The truck will not be making rounds again; once it passes the house, it will not be back. There will be a free drop site behind the City Hall for items accepted, where residents may bring items. This is for Sherburn residents only. This may be a good time to move items that would be an ordinance violation. Items that are not garbage and may be refurbished may be put on the curb before the cleanup day.
In other news:
— A representative from ISG presented an application for the use of the school-owned land near the railroad. He showed another for an irrigation well, which would run about 50 gallons per minute of non-potable water. There may be a need for an ordinance concerning non-potable water. The council approved the applications.
— The council approved a temporary liquor license for the Sherburn Fire Relief Association.
— The council approved the licensing for cannabis sales after the second reading of the ordinance. The clerk answered questions about licensing. The state must license anyone before the city will license them.
— The council also approved the amendment of the mobile park recreational vehicle ordinance to permit year-round parking of certain vehicles and tiny homes.
— During the council reports, a question was asked about doing controlled burns by the Fire Department, and if it’s possible for some of the derelict houses. Sometimes, the burn is more expensive than demolishing a property because of asbestos removal. Council Ringnell agreed to look into the situation. Look for a list of accepted items soon.
— The city council went into closed session.
The next meeting of the Sherburn City Council will be at 5 p.m. on May 5 at City Hall.
