MCW School Board talks finances

SHERBURN — The Martin County West School Board met on Monday evening. Superintendent Cori Reynolds presented the financial and enrollment Items. The budget is 75 percent for the year, and enrollment is steady at 625 students.

The budget update was discussed with a $20,000 to $35,000 projected savings and some transfers to restricted funds. A five-year projection featured a three percent increase and an enrollment of 600. Gathering final details and keeping a close watch on spending was also mentioned. The hope for a fund balance of 16.7 percent when the new building is opened was also mentioned. A handout of the Fund Balance Projections was discussed by the board. Adjustments to expenditures were listed as $ 311,465. The notes explained some of the adjustments such as sale of properties, reductions in sections and supplies, insurance reductions, update of staffing in business and special education and custodial hours.

District special events were mentioned by Reynolds. The grade 5 and 6 band members were in the Honor Band, 5 students participated in the School Art Show at the Red Rock facility, and an Empower Me presentation was given an elementary grade.

The principals’ reports were given. High School Principal Autumn Welcome reported that state testing is being done, an impaired driving event will be done this week, prom is scheduled for April 26, and Graduation plans are in the works. Trimont Elementary Principal Michelle Baker reported that testing is being done, that the students helped celebrate a favorite teacher (Crosby), and that both elementary principals were interviewing teachers for 2025-2026. Sherburn Elementary Principal Nikole Bowie reported that field trips are starting and plans for the second graders to visit Trimont school are scheduled. The Kindergarten Roundup had 90 people present, and there is a plan for Kindercamp this August. Rosters for the grades next year are being worked on.

In other business:

— The following donations were accepted with thanks: $588 from Donor’s Choice to first grade for plant project; $2,360 from Federated Rural Electric to CER programs; $100 from Ronda Quinn for Robotics.

— The board approved the resignation of Lisa Crosby as a Special Education teacher and the hiring of Darcy Bakken as a Special Education teacher at Trimont and the high school. Jenna Burmeister was reassigned to Grade 2 teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.

— A public hearing will be at 5 p.m. on May 19 concerning the renewal of the operating levy. The school board meeting will follow that hearing.

— The CER has many summer projects planned. They got a grant and will have a Build-a-Bear session in May or June. The Storybook Theatre is scheduled for this summer. The Preschool is getting ready. There are virtual classes for adults planned, too. MDA has granted money for the Learning Limited program with the four nearby school districts.

— The 2025-2026 School year Calendar was approved with 171 contact days for Elementary students and 173 contact days for the junior high and high school. The teachers will have 182 contact days.

— The District Advisory Committee meeting will be at 5 p.m. on May 20.

— The School Board committees reported, and then the board went into closed session about sales of properties.

The next meeting of the MCW School Board will be on May 19, with a public hearing at 5 p.m. and the board meeting to follow at approximately 6 p.m.
