Fairmont Speech claims first Kato Cup
FAIRMONT — Twenty-nine members of the Fairmont Speech Team competed at the Mankato East Speech Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Mankato East High School in Mankato, Minn. There were 24 teams in attendance and nearly 400 competitors.
Fairmont took First Place in the team sweepstakes with 106 points. Marshall took Second Place with 85 points. Mankato Loyola and Mankato East took Third Place with 65 points.
Fairmont also won the first annual “Kato Cup.” This award was given to the team with the most sweepstakes points from the last three Mankato speech tournaments.
Varsity Final Individual Results:
Sophomore Gabbie Thoeny took Seventh Place in Creative Expression.
Senior Grace Simpson was the Champion in Dramatic Interpretation.
Seniors Grace Simpson and Oliver Thedens took 4th Place in Duo Interpretation.
Senior Oliver Thedens took Second Place in Extemporaneous Reading.
Senior Dominick Lund-May was the Champion in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Junior Bel Lutterman took Third Place in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Sophomore Leon Yang was the Champion in Humorous Interpretation.
Senior Isaac Thomas took Fourth Place in Humorous Interpretation.
Junior Bel Lutterman took Second Place in Original Oratory.
Senior Alayna Haefner took Fifth Place in Original Oratory.
Junior Cooper Gudahl was the Champion in Prose.
Sophomore Norah Heille took Fifth Place in Prose.
Sophomore Allie Streit took Sixth Place in Prose.
Eighth Grader Sophia Streit took Fifth Place in Storytelling.

Seventh Grader Isabelle Soelter took Third Place in Extemporaneous Reading.

Eighth Grader Georgia Werre took Fifth Place in Informative Speaking.
Freshman Jazzleene Lopez was the Champion in Original Oratory.
Eighth Grader Hannah Gries took Fourth Place in Original Oratory.
The Fairmont Speech Team competes on Saturday, March 1 in Shakopee. The team is coached by Kathleen Walker, Erik Walker and Miles Duffey.
