New officer eager to aid community

FAIRMONT– Cass Davis is the newest member on the Fairmont Police Department. Davis, a Blue Earth native, began his role with the department in late January.

Davis graduated from Blue Earth in 2023 and following that he went to Minnesota North College- Vermillion Campus in Ely for law enforcement.

Having come from a family with ties to civil service, Davis always knew it was something he wanted to pursue.

“My brother is a police officer so he was definitely a big part of it. That’s what attracted me to the career,” he said.

He interned with the city of Blue Earth Police Department and did ride alongs with them, Fairmont Police Department, Faribault County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol.

Upon completing a two year program, Davis applied to the Fairmont Police Department and started on Jan. 23.

To start, he’s working the B shift which is 4 p.m. until 2 a.m.. He said it’s going well so far and that he enjoys getting to experience some of the day shift and the night shift.

“You get a little mix of what you’re dealing with,” he said.

Even though Davis is a newcomer, he already feels a sense of belonging within the department.

“My FTOs (Field Training Officers) and every officer have provided me with great information,” Davis said, adding that everyone has been welcoming since he started.

Police Chief Mike Hunter said, “we are very pleased to have another new officer from southern Minnesota join our department. It is very rewarding to see our recent group of new officers that are returning to the area to start their careers.

Along with Davis, Officers Shaylynn Anderson and Derek Hughes, both MCW graduates, and Klay Brown, a Fairmont High School graduate, began working with the department full-time in the fall of 2024.

Hunter said that the department is actively engaged in the recruitment process to hire two more officers due to one vacancy and one anticipated retirement.

For now, he said, “we look forward to the excellent level of service Officer Davis will provide for our community and he will be a great addition to our department.”

As for Davis, he is excited to get to know the community better.

“They’re a huge asset. We work for them and they can provide us with a ton of information. I’m looking forward to working with them and creating relationships with them,” Davis said.
