School Board discusses several opportunities

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont School Board discussed ongoing and upcoming projects and ideas during Tuesday’s meeting.

Superintendent Andy Traetow said they are looking to bolster their College In the Schools (CIS) offerings starting with the 2025-26 school year. Health and Physical Education are the two offerings being considered for addition.

“We currently offer a number of College In the Schools classes,” Traetow said. “PSEO Health and Physical Education are two of our highest enrolled PSEO classes. We’re hoping with this opportunity to keep more students in our buildings through that offering and allow them to earn those college credits.”

The request for proposal (FRP) process is starting for the next food service contract. Traetow said it will begin later in February or early March. Pre-FRP meetings have already been had with current provider Chartwells and Lunchtime Solutions, while a sit-down with Taher is happening later in the week.

Fairmont Opera House is looking to continue using the school’s Performing Arts Center for summer Community Theater and Youth Theater Camp. Traetow said he talked to Fairmont Opera House representative Blake Pothoff regarding the continuing arrangement, and a facilities agreement is in the works.

“Adding to those availabilities while our local opera house works to raise funds to renovate and bring that building back to life,” Traetow said. “The Opera House Board has been very supportive in our collaborations to make sure we work together providing those opportunities for our kids and community.”

The next school board meeting will be Feb. 25, with a work session to discuss facilities planning and school survey results.

Starting at $2.99/week.
