GHEC looks to new school year
GRANADA– On Thursday the Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board discussed once again the possibility of adding cameras to classrooms to monitor repetitions of student behaviors. After briefly discussing prices, the board brought up the possibility of beginning an inquiry with another company for possibly cheaper options.
Activities director Erin Roiger discussed the status of activities and she said that on August 6, an activities meeting will commence at the school. Later in the month, fall season activities will begin practice. Volleyball coaches are lined up. Roiger pitched the idea of e-sports (video games) and drone competitions. Roiger mentioned much of the youth is drawn to the popular video game Fortnite, and would open up possibilities for non-athlete students to engage in friendly competition.
Bethany Maday discussed a new reading curriculum for children in grades K-5 and said she and teachers are preparing for implementation. Maday is currently looking at the possibility of a new curriculum for grades 6-12 that could be implemented for the 2025-2026 year. Maday plans to access programs technology-wise and get things purchased.
Principal Andy Walden said (in his notes, which were shared by the board) that two individuals have been selected for the high school English teacher positions. The school plans to update its website and app.
In other news, the board:
— Mentioned that a new boiler would be shipped soon.
— Approved the Dairy bid from Kemps for the 2024-2025 school year.
— Accepted the donation of $250 from Casey’s General Store.
— Approved the elementary, middle, high school, and faculty/staff handbooks for the 2024-2025 school years.
— Approved the Crisis Management Plan for the 2024-2025 school year.
— Discussed activity fees and pricing for the 2024-2025 school year. The school board is currently determining the cost for Theatre Arts programs.
