Council hears update from admin.
SHERBURN — The Sherburn City Council met on Monday and heard from Deputy Clerk, Andrea Ballard, who reported on the conference she attended and thanked the council for the opportunity to learn many things about the city clerk position. She reported that the City had good election judges. Most towns have a clerk and then an administrator. The classes she attended helped her to learn records keeping and data records and practices information. She also had classes in law (state and federal) concerning towns, budgeting, property taxes and more. She networked with a small town group for good information. In May she will go to a class in St. Cloud, that will be held for a week and go into depth on the classes she took at this conference. She will be certified as a municipal clerk after three years of learning from these classes. She thanked the city council for the opportunity to go to these classes.
There were two residents on the agenda. One resident said he had a sewer/manhole cover emergency on Friday and did get the help he needed to reconcile the situation before Easter. He suggested that an emergency number be posted or on a recording from the city hall as to which people would be appropriate to call after hours. He mentioned that a new resident would not know the people to call like he did. He thanked the utility workers for helping him with his emergency.
Another resident asked about some remodeling of a shed and what permits he needed and he also wanted to know how he could hook up water to that shed and add a small addition to the shed. The council thanked him for asking before remodeling and referred him to the building inspector/city employee. The employee works on Mondays and Wednesdays. The resident will contact the employee, Harry Jeness. Jeness had reported that one house was to be demolished by the owner and reported on the other abandoned properties.
The Administrator’s report included a discussion about the liquor store/Red Carpet inventory which is now done. The need for a manager was discussed and three applications have been received. The council also discussed the need for a computerized inventory system better than the one they have. There were several suggestions and the Administrator will look into them and report back. Some were point of sale and some were connected to credit card company reports. They need to make
sure their internet can handle the inventory software, etc.
