Officials elected in Martin County

FAIRMONT- Incumbent Jeffrey Markquart overwhelmingly defeated challenger James Kotewa for Martin County Sheriff on Tuesday.

Markquart won 5,110 to 2,392 with write in candidates, including Travas Diersen, who conducted a prominent campaign for sheriff but did not make it on the ballot, receiving 571 votes.

Michelle Duncan won her race for Martin County Recorder with 4,412 votes compared to Karen Koehler’s 2,984. Duncan was the deputy of previous recorder Diane Sanders.

Meanwhile Jamie Bleess for District 2 and Richard Koons for District 4 sailed to victory in their uncontested races with 1,133 of 1,156 and 1,633 of 1,649 votes respectively for the Martin County Commission. Koons was the incumbent while Bleess is a newcomer.

In an uncontested election for Fairmont School Board Mari Myren, Mike Edman and Jen Harris secured seats with 2,583, 2,819 and 3,161 votes respectively. Jen Harris will be a new member of the board while Myren and Edman are incumbents.

Similarly Sarah Rohman, Danielle Wilmes, and Nathan Vrieze all secured seats on the school board for Martin County West after running uncontested receiving 1,561, 1,212, and 1,349 votes respectively. Wilmes will be a new member on the board.

There were also no contested seats in elections for Granada Huntley East Chain School Board with Ken Madsen, Bradley Mattson and Laura Koch receiving 631, 620 and 569 votes respectively. Koch will be a new member of the board. A ballot measure to request authorization for the district to apply for a building bond narrowly failed 402 to 421. The measure would have allowed the district to apply for state funds which would be used to augment funding already set aside to improve school facilities. Although a measure to reduce the district’s existing levy passed 401 to 348, it will not take effect due to it being contingent on the passage of the preceding measure.

In elections for Truman School Board incumbents Michael Pfeil, James Farnum and newcomer Maria Haler received 675, 499 and 429 votes respectively, securing seats on the board. Haler narrowly beat out incumbent Deb Neitzke by just 18 votes, Neitzke received 411.
