Elizabeth Nell Updike was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Iowa, daughter of Martin and Florence (Woodruff) Updike. Liz attended country school and later school in Welcome. On June 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Elmer Juhl Sr. in Welcome, Minn. After their marriage, the couple worked for several area farmers. Elmer and Liz had 7 children. In her later years, she had an upholstery shop, which she is remembered for her superior work. Elmer died on Aug. 1, 1997. She continued living in her home in Welcome. More recently she lived in Temperance Lake Ridge Assisted Living in Sherburn before moving to Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont where she has lived the past years. Liz was a long time member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ where she was a member of the afternoon guild and helped quilt many a quilt with them for fund raisers. Liz lived around Welcome her whole life and loved to be around family, go fishing, gardening and she did a lot of canning of vegetables, sewing, crocheting, quilting and a sports fan of the Twins and Vikings. Her greatest joy was spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and gatherings with friends and relatives. Although she will be greatly missed, God has her in his care and we have our memories of her in our hearts forever.

Liz's memory will be cherished by her seven children, Bruce and Judy Snow Juhl from Kokomo, Ind.; Delores and Wayne Wilke from Millard, Neb.; Beverly and Sylvan Peterson from Jackson, Minn.; Elmer Jr. and Shirley Ficken Juhl from Welcome, Minn.; Barbara and Russell Plumhoff from Welcome, Minn.; Harold and Valerie Noreen Juhl from Fairmont, Minn.; and Martin Juhl of Sherburn and fiancee, Shirley Dykshoorn from Spencer, Iowa; 18 grandchildren and foster grand children; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, Liz is survived by sister-in-law, Helen Juhl from Kan., and a brother-in-law, Robert Simaeck from Iowa.

Liz was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Elmer Juhl Sr.; her parents; brothers, William and May Updike, Harry and Joann Updike, and Martin Updike; sisters, Rhoda Updike, Ardeana and Harold Pugsley and June Simacek; one infant grandson, Troy Plumhoff; one granddaughter, Ann Peterson; and daughter-in-law, Debra Ficken Juhl.

We are grateful for her life, love, and wisdom. The family wishes to thank Dr. Wolverton and Dr. Parnell and the staff of Lakeview Health Care Home, who provided excellent care and support for her.
