John A. Gardner

TRUMAN - Private family services for John A. Gardner, 84, of Truman, Minn., will be held at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel in Fairmont, Minn., with military honors provided by the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 and Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36.

John passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, in Truman, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of arrangements.

John Alvin Gardner was born June 15, 1930, in Remington, Ind., the son of Arthur and Fay (Nelson) Gardner. John graduated from Gilboa High School in 1947. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 2, 1951, and served in the Pacific on the USS Currituck and USS Siboney. He was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal, Navy "E" Award, Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. John achieved the rank of GM3 before receiving an honorable discharge on Nov. 1, 1954. On Aug. 11, 1960, John was united in marriage to Caroline Rockwood at the Church of Christ in Goshen, Ind. This union was blessed with three children:?Michael, Rena and Peggy. The couple resided in Goshen and Fowler, Ind., before moving to Truman, Minn., in 1968. John and Caroline shared 54 years together. John was a truck driver for Beaver Transport in Wisconsin as well as the House of Print in Madelia, Minn., and McConnell Farms in Armstrong, Iowa. John was a member of the Lewisville Legion. During his free time, John enjoyed model trains, fishing, and watching Twins baseball. He especially loved the time he spent with his family, friends, and his dog, Prudi. John was a true craftsman and carpenter. He could build just about anything.

Left to cherish his memory include: his wife, Caroline Gardner of Truman, Minn.; son, Michael (Lori) Carpenter of Thief River Falls, Minn.; daughters, Rena (Jeffrey) Gillman of New Brighton, Minn., and Peggy (Roger) Pederson of Madelia, Minn.; grandchildren, Daniel, Beth, Chris, Matthew, Calista, Gustus John, Derek, and Nathan; three great-grandchildren; nephews, Mike Kiser of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ben Hoppe of Fairmont, Minn., and Marnie Ahlbrecht of Gibbon, Minn.; other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Arthur and Fay Gardner, John was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Gillman; brother, Jim Gardner; and sister, Dorothy Kercher.
