Lavonne "Bonnie" Avis Steen

JACKSON - A funeral service for Lavonne "Bonnie" Avis Steen, 79, of Jackson, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson with Pastor Christopher Drew, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Jackson.

Bonnie passed away Friday, July 11, 2014, at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., at the age of 79 years, 5 months, and 2 days. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. Lavonne "Bonnie" Avis Steen was born Feb. 9, 1935, in Jay Township, Martin County, Minn., the daughter of Ernest and Helen (Graves) Buchan. She graduated from Sherburn High School in 1953 and later attended school in Kansas City, Mo., training as a teletype operator. She then worked for Braniff International Airlines in Minneapolis. On June 4, 1955, she was united in marriage to Merville "Merv" William Steen at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. After marriage, they farmed in Enterprise Township. Bonnie was a lifelong member of the Alpha and now the Jackson Presbyterian Church, where she had been baptized and confirmed. She was a member of PEO, Jackson American Legion Auxiliary, the Fountain of the Sun Lions Club in Mesa, Ariz., and the Jackson County Porkettes. She served on many community boards, AFS, Dollars for Scholars, helped coordinate the Fox Lake friendship golf and had been a 4-H leader and member for many years. She had a long list of accomplishments, including being named Jackson Kiwanis Outstanding Farmer of the Year and had been President of the Minnesota Farmers Mutual Insurance Company Auxiliary. She and her loving husband, Merv, traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. She enjoyed golfing, playing cards with friends and bird watching. Bonnie loved to entertain guests and was an awesome hostess.

Bonnie is survived by her husband of 59 years, Merv Steen of Jackson; four children, Merry Jo (Mike) Escher of Sioux Falls, S.D., Pat (Sam) Jones of Mesa, Ariz., Sandy (Jeff) Bjorkman of Park Rapids, Minn., and Brian (LeeAnn) Steen of Sherburn, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Carey Escher (Jeff Huebert, Michelle Escher Kooiman (Darin), Justin (Angela) Escher, Sam Jones, Kyle (Hanna) Bjorkman, Jessica (Jayme) Olson, Sabrina Steen, Matraca Steen, and Rebecca Steen; 10 great-grandchildren; five siblings, Beulah Erickson of Sherburn, Minn., Beryl Buchan of Austin, Minn., Margaret "Peggy" Burgeson of Armstrong, Iowa, Joan Hartke of Mesa, Ariz., and Cleone Syverson of Windom, Minn.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, and a great-granddaughter, Layla Escher. Blessed be the memory of Lavonne "Bonnie" Avis Steen.
