Donald Henriksen was born Aug. 28, 1926, on the family farm in Ringsted, Iowa, to Fred and Amanda Hansen Henriksen. Donald was the eldest, followed by John and Norma. Norma would bring nieces and a nephew into his life to love, and to love him back. John would be his farming partner and would watch over him as arthritis began to limit his ability to farm. Donald served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and returned to Ringsted to farm with his father and brother. After the day's work, he would clean up and, sporting dress pants and a dress shirt, usually green, he would visit friends. He spent countless hours "choring" for neighboring farmers so that they could get away with their families. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran church in Ringsted for many years and held various positions. He was one of the men that fought the fire, and saved the beautiful baptismal fount, on the night that lighting struck the steeple. Donald married Joyce Schleininger Pearson and resided in Fairmont, Minn., for over 30 years. Donald and Joyce continued to enjoy socializing with friends and especially loved trips in New Ulm with its rich polka heritage. Donald loved to read, especially car magazines. Memorials may be directed to the Ringsted public library or the Valley Vue Care Center library in Armstrong, Iowa. The family would like to express their gratitude to Sandy Mckay, Lori Devoe and Heidi Brooks and the other dedicated caregivers who provided loving care to both Donald and Joyce in their final years at home.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Amanda; and his wife, Joyce.
He is survived by his brother, John, of Armstrong Iowa; and his sister, Norma Henriksen, of Eagan, Minn. He is also survived by three nieces, one nephew, six great-nieces and nephews and 12 great-great nieces and nephews. Donald leaves behind a great number of friends who will miss his caring and giving friendship.
