Esther Margariete (Hall) Owens was born Oct. 8, 1910, near Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of John and Lena (Ericcson) Hall. She received her education attending country schools in Wisconsin and Martin County, Minn. On Dec. 10, 1929, Esther was united in marriage to Wayne Owens at a family home near East Chain, Minn. Together, the couple made their home on a farm in Grant Township, Iowa. Esther often told how their first home was a tar paper shack and it would get so cold in the winters that her water bucket would be frozen each morning. Esther loved life on the farm and worked for many years alongside Wayne. She also took great pride in making a wonderful home for her husband and son. In her later years, Esther worked as a nursing assistant at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center where she cared for elderly people. She retired nearly 40 years ago. Esther was a member of East Chain Evangelical Free Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for preschool students for many years. She was active in the Women's Ministry organization, especially White Cross, which provided support for missionaries and an orphanage. Esther was a very good cook and won the Minnesota State angel food cake baking contest at the State Fair. She was also an avid gardener and was known in the family for her wonderful dill pickles. Esther was the granddaughter of E. Banks Hall, one of the founding fathers of Fairmont, Minn. Hall Lake is named after her grandfather.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Wendell Owens of East Chain, Minn.; grandchildren and spouses, Jodi Kristenson and her husband, Kevin of East Chain, Minn., Tedd Owens and his wife, Sue of Milaca, Minn., Nathan Owens and his wife, Kim of Overland Park, Kan., and Nicole Berg and her husband, Jon of Milaca, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Cara Owens of Maple Grove, Minn., Bryce Owens of Minneapolis, Minn., Kassi Owens of Denver, Colo., Kole Kristenson of East Chain, Minn., Konnor Kristenson of East Chain, Minn., Sam Berg, Joe Berg, Jack Berg, and Ben Berg all of Milaca, Minn., Matthias Owens of Overland Park, Kan.; as well as many other extended family and friends.
