Harold was born July 21, 1929, in Jackson, Minn., to Samuel and Thora (Jensen) Leverson. At the age of 6, the family moved to a farm south of Sherburn, Minn. As a young boy, he got the nickname "Rusty" from the family hired man. He told him he was going to call him "Rusty" because it was the color of his hair and freckles on his face. Rusty graduated from Sherburn High School in 1947 and attended Gustavus Adolphus College. Rusty was united in marriage to Marcia Kerns on May 8, 1954, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Together, they raised their nine children on the family farm where he lived for 70 years. Rusty enjoyed farming and was also employed by Monsanto as the plant manager. A few years later, he became Sherburn's City Clerk/Treasurer/Administrator, a position he held for 23 years until his retirement. Rusty served on the Hospice Board and was instrumental in starting the Martin County Hospice Program (now called United Hands Hospice). Rusty loved and avidly followed his children's sports and music activities. He enjoyed big band music and dancing with his wife. Rusty also loved being Santa Claus for many families in the Sherburn area for over 15 years. He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Sherburn until moving to Fairmont in 2006 when he became a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont.

Rusty is survived by his wife, Marcia, of Fairmont; children, Ann (Tom) Whalen of Gaylord, Susan and (Kent) Anderson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Carolyn "Tina" (Barry) Hilgendorf of Fairmont, Ellen (Eric) Larson of Chaska, Mark (Lisa) Leverson of New Prague, Michael (Jacqueline) Leverson of Jordan, Paul (Karen) Leverson of Iron Mountain, Mich., Eric (Nancy) Leverson of Fairmont, and Sara (Brian) Picka of Victoria; sisters-in-law, Luella Leverson of Kensington, Betty (Kenneth) Thate of Fairmont, Mary Kenworthy of Walla Walla, Wash., and Mickey (Swede) Theobald of Sherburn; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Mary) Kerns of Tigard, Ore., and Dan (Beverly) Kerns of Fredericksburg, Va.; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
