FONDA, Iowa - The Iowa Class 1A, No. 9-ranked Newell-Fonda Mustangs plated eight sixth-inning runs before fending off Class 2A, No. 8-ranked North Union's five-run seventh inning for a 9-8 non-league softball victory on Tuesday night in Fonda, Iowa.
Newell-Fonda combined four hits and one walk with four North Union errors in the bottom of the sixth to transform a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 lead.
The Warriors, however, displayed their mettle by netting five runs in the top of the seventh. Sarah Rolling connected for a two-run home run - her fifth of the summer season - to highlight North Union's late comeback bid.
Dena Looft went 2-for-4 with a team-leading three RBIs for the Warriors, while teammate Erica Anderson doubled twice in three official at-bats to produce two RBIs to go with one run scored.
Autumn Boland, who went 2-for-3 with a double, scored a pair of runs for North Union, while Taylor Mathine and Shaylee Hanning supplied one hit and one run scored. Anna Ingalls also added a hit, while Kyarsten Mullen and courtesy runner Bre Anderson each scored a run.
Starting pitcher Peyton Oleson allowed nine runs - only five earned - on eight hits, walked one, hit one batter and struck out eight in six innings of work to absorb the loss.
North Union (8-2) travels to Spirit Lake, Iowa, on Friday.
Mason City Newman 6, North Union 2 - Kaden Wadle fired an eight-hit complete game to steer the Iowa Class 1A, No. 2-ranked Knights to a 6-2 victory over the Warriors on Tuesday night in Bancroft, Iowa.
Wadle allowed two earned runs, struck out three and walked two in seven innings of work to net the win.
Pete Lapointe went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Ryan Clancy went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, while Jack Fitzgerald went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Newman.
Parker Oleson went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored to top the Warriors, while Colin Runksmeier and Logan Hellman each contributed two hits to the effort.
Cody Runksmeier and Alex Krantz each added a hit for North Union.
Krantz allowed six runs - three earned - on 11 hits, struck out five and walked five in seven innings of work to take the loss.
North Union (5-7) hits the road to Spencer, Iowa, tonight.
