MANKATO - Not many people could be comfortable on a links golf course with strong winds in a tournament that decides whether or not your season continues.
For much of the Section 2A golf field, there wasn't much comfort to be found, but Martin County West senior Cordell Weber proved why he is a perennial state contender by winning medalist honors with his meet-low 37-36-73 on Monday at North Links Golf Course in Mankato.
"I think that wind today, it didn't matter if you were with it, against it or going across it, it affected each shot," said Martin County West head coach Jeff Ross. "Cordell played a great round to come in with a score like that today."

While Cordell Weber won the boys individual title to advance to the Class A State Meet on June 10-11 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Logan Weber clawed her way back with a fifth-place score of 44-52-96 to earn a state bid.
"It was an amazing comeback for Logan today," said Ross. "She struggled on the first nine, and I thought if she could come back and finish with a 96, she could be OK. I didn't expect it to be so close, but she earned her spot."
Also taking a state bid was Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain's Michael Dallager, who scored a 42-44-86 for a spot in the tournament.
The United South Central Rebels swept the team portion of the meet, with the girls winning with a 405 and the boys scored a 322.
The Martin County West girls team finished fourth with a score of 461.
"Today, for the boys and the girls, this might have been the highest cut scores I can remember," said Ross.
Cordell Weber started his round with a bogey on the par-5, No. 1 but bounced back to par the next eight holes to go into the clubhouse at 1-over par with 37.
The Maverick senior then responded to start the back nine with a birdie on the par-4, No. 10.
Cordell Weber parred No. 11, carding a four before scoring another bogey on No. 12.
Again, Cordell Weber responded with a streak of pars, this time finishing his round with six straight for a back-nine par round of 36.
Meanwhile, Logan Weber finished her first nine on the back, shooting a two-par nine-hole score of 52.
"Logan didn't shoot well on the back nine to start out. She parred the first hole, and then got a par on 7, but she struggled," said Ross. "But she came back that second nine and really played better."
Logan Weber sank four pars on the front nine, including three straight, to start off the second nine.
Weber's 44 on the front was just enough to earn her fifth-place honors in the meet and a spot in the state meet.
Dallager shot a five-par front-nine score of 42 and then followed that up with a solid five-par back nine to score a 42-44-86 to earn his state spot.
"I thought coming into the clubhouse today that I might have a chance with my score to make it, I've been golfing well lately," said Dallager.
The Mavericks' Connor Anderson came up just short of a chance to compete at the state meet.
Anderson fired a four-par round of 44-46-90, but it was not enough to grab a spot in the top five.
Hunter Olson and Jacob Buntjer also had their chances to give the Mavericks another state competitor.
Olson shot a two-par round of 46-49-95, while Buntjer finished his round with three pars with a score of 49-49-98.
Jackson Maloney competed in his first Section 2A meet, and carded a birdie on the par-4, No. 6 and three pars highlighting his round of 51-51-102.
In addition to Logan Weber's efforts on the course, Morgan Larson finished the meet with a round of 50-58-108 to add to the Mavericks' team score.
Jennifer Petersen finished with a 62-55-117 and Taylor DeVary completed the counting marks with a 67-73-140.
