FAIRMONT - A funeral service for Kenneth E. Malo, 83, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin Co. V.F.W. Post 1222 will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont.
Ken passed away Thursday afternoon, May 22, 2014, at Lakeview Methodist Healthcare Center in Fairmont after battling a benign brain tumor for the past six years. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service Thursday, June 5, at the church.
Kenneth Elmer Malo was born Nov. 21, 1930, in Rutland Township, Martin County, Minn., the son of Elmer and Lucille (Grems) Malo. He was received into the kingdom of God through Holy Baptism on Dec. 14, 1930, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fairmont. He reaffirmed his faith at his confirmation on April 2, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church, Fraser Township. Kenneth attended District 80 country school in Rutland Township and then Zion Lutheran Parochial School in Fraser Township. In 1948, he graduated from Fairmont High School. Ken was raised on a farm in Fraser Township. On Jan. 16, 1951, he entered the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. After his honorable discharge he was united in marriage to Arlys Thiesse on Oct. 24, 1952, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilbert. From Oct. 1952 to March 1981, Ken was self-employed, as a livestock and a grain farmer near East Chain. During the last four of those years, he also served as a training team leader for Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC). In March 1981, he became FCIC District Director of a 13-county area in southwest Wisconsin, which moved the couple to Bangor, Wis. In 1988, Ken became a claims examiner for FCIC in the St. Paul regional office, before serving as a USDA area claims specialist at Stevens Point, Wis., until his retirement in 1995. While living in Wisconsin, Ken and Arlys helped organize and build a new Lutheran Church in West Salem, and Ken was involved in the Anderson Good Legion Post 40.
In 2001, the couple moved to a home in Fairmont. Ken was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fairmont where he held various positions. He was also a member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36, Disabled American Veterans and the Korean War Veterans organizations. He served for many years on the honor guard. Those that will cherish Ken's memory include his wife of 61 years, Arlys Malo of Fairmont; one son, Mark Malo and his wife, Karla of East Chain; one daughter, Susan Sukalski and her husband, Kevin of Fairmont; grandchildren, Kristin Engelmann and her husband, Josh of Mayer, Minn., Miranda Reiman, and her husband, Mark of Cozad, Neb., Lukus Malo, and his wife, Maggie of Fairmont, and Alex Sukalski and his wife, Jennifer of Iowa City, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Carson, Brooklyn, Cassidy and Mckenna Reiman, and Luther and Lucy Malo; brothers, Robert Malo and his wife, Sara of Sherburn, Delmer Malo and his wife, Beth of Fairmont; sister, Lois Thiesse of Fairmont; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Malo, Elda Leiding and Charlotte Thiesse; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Elmer and Lucille Malo, Kenneth was also preceded in death by his brother, Roland Malo and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
