FAIRMONT - Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond V. McGowan, 96, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont.
Ray passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 21, 2014, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today, May 23, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of the arrangements for the family.
Raymond Vincent McGowan was born April 11, 1918, in Trimont, Minn., the son of Patrick and Loa (Lochner) McGowan. He grew up on a farm nine miles northwest of Trimont and attended District #128 country school. He went on to high school and graduated from Triumph-Monterey High School. After his schooling, he entered the U.S. Army and served during WWII, mostly in Alaska. While he was getting ready to be discharged from the Army, he met Audrey Leer. On Oct. 5, 1946, Ray and Audrey were united in marriage in Lake Hopatcong, N.J. They moved to Fairmont and Ray worked for the Olson Furniture Store and Olson Funeral Home. In 1952, they moved to Florida with some other families from Fairmont to try rice farming. They returned in 1954 and rented a couple different farms in Martin County and Jackson County and settled on a farm close to where Ray grew up northwest of Trimont. In 1968, they returned to Fairmont and Ray helped his brother Jack operate Jack's Gas Station before working in the parts department for the Park Motor Company.
He is survived by: his wife of 67 years, Audrey McGowan of Fairmont; one son, Tom McGowan and his wife, Su, of Taipei, Taiwan; one daughter, Kathy McGowan of Morgan, Minn.; one grandson, Patrick McGowan of Shanghai, China; brother-in-law, Henry Leer of Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and his parents-in-law, Raymond was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Jack McGowan; and two sisters, Marie Rasmussen and Dorothy "Dottie" McGowan.
