NORTHROP - A funeral service for Walter A. Kakeldey, 78, of Northrop, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014, at St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop. Interment with military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222 will be in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Northrop.
Walter passed away Friday morning, May 16, 2014, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of arrangements.
Walter August Kakeldey was born May 24, 1935, in Welcome, Minn., the son of August and Emma (Hunte) Kakeldey. He received his education at Northrop grade school and later at Fairmont High School. Walter furthered his education at Jackson Vo-Tech, where he earned a drafting degree. He was a lifelong resident of Northrop.
Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 5, 1955. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 10th Heavy Weapons Infantry. Walter earned the rank of Specialist (T3) and was awarded the Sharpshooter badge and Good Conduct Medal before receiving an honorable discharge on Nov. 29, 1957. Walter married Sonja Trembley in 1960, to which was born one son, Troy. He later shared 30 years together with Bonnie Scott until she passed away in November 2005. Walter then met Lois Lenz with whom he spent the last seven years and became engaged. The couple resided in Northrop. He enjoyed vacationing in the Cayman Islands, Barbados and Germany. Walter managed Berchey's in Fairmont for many years as well as working at Teledyne Aerospace until his retirement. During his free time, Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He took great pride in his yard and spent many hours working on it.
Those left to cherish his memory include: his son, Troy (Connie) Kakeldey of Fairmont, Minn.; fiance, Lois Lenz of Northrop, Minn.; grandchildren, Tanner Kakeldey, Bethany Kakeldey, Joshua Kastning, and Ryan Harmon; other relatives and friends.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, August and Emma Kakeldey; and lifelong companion, Bonnie Scott.
