NEW ULM - Harold F. Simon, 91, of New Ulm, died at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014, at AbbottNorthwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, South Chapel, in New Ulm, with Pastor Brad Kuebler, officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldier's Rest Section. There will be a lunch following the service at the cemetery at River Valley Christian Church, 100 N. Washington St., in New Ulm.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, South Chapel, in New Ulm and will continue from 7:3011 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Harold Fred Simon was born June 11, 1922, at 11 a.m. in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Henry and Catherine (Kotewa) Simon. At the age of 20, he joined the Army Air Corps, known today as the U.S. Air Force. He married Joyce Christensen at Westover Field on April 20, 1944, in Springfield, Mass., before leaving for a mission overseas during WWII. He was a 2nd Lieutenant and navigator in a B24 airplane that was shot down while flying a mission that crash landed in England. Harold received the Air Medal and Purple Heart. After returning to the states, he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Forestry. He worked for the Department of Natural Resources in Big Falls, Faribault, Grand Rapids and New Ulm, where he retired as a land appraiser in 1984. Harold enjoyed gardening and searching for arrowheads. He also enjoyed traveling in their RV to Arizona and California. He was an active member of the River Valley Christian Church in New Ulm where he served as deacon and Trustee. Harold was a member of the American Legion Post #132, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #15, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #807.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Joyce Christensen Simon; his children, Gloria (Hiroshi) Takagi, Linda (Roye) Stelzer, Timothy Simon, and Karen (Bill) McGuigan. Also, survived by his grandchildren, Naomi (Cesar) Acosta, Elisa Takagi, Emily (Steven) Ellingson, Elena Takagi, Tara McGuigan and Nicole McGuigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Thomas; and his brother, Clarence.
