FAIRMONT - A Celebration of Life service for Rolf A. Walter, 73, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont.
Rolf passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 12:30-2 p.m Friday, April 25, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of the arrangements.
Rolf A. Walter was born May 11, 1940, in Hannover, Germany to Karl and Hanna (Ricke) Walter. He immigrated to the United States in September 1953, after his mother passed away, his father having died earlier in combat in the second World War. He lived with Dr. and Dr. Edmund C. Stucke in Garrison, N.D. He graduated from Garrison High School in Garrison, N.D., and studied at Minot State University, Moorhead State University, and at the University of Minnesota (TC), earning a bachelor of science degree. He taught Physical Education, mathematics, and German at Boyd, Trimont, and Martin Luther H.S. He prized the value of sports for young people and supported them through coaching, organizing Kiwanis baseball, and officiating high school sports. Rolf married Ramona (Jensen) in 1972.
He is survived by his wife Ramona; son, Gregory and his wife, Grete of Northfield; daughter, Jenna and her husband Isaac Stevens of Fairmont; grandchildren, Carsten and Erik Walter, Leslie, Drew, and Oliver Stevens; brothers, Lynn (Bev) Hummel and Bruce (Phyllis) Hummel; sister, Margo (Jerry) Staehling; and sister-in-law, Wanda Hummel. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gary Hummel.
