FAIRMONT - The Family Fun Fair has been a benchmark family event in Fairmont for 29 years, and it's still going strong.
The annual gathering will be held 4:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Fairmont Elementary School.
"It's amazing how many older kids come back," said Roni Dauer, director of Community Education and Recreation.
They return to enjoy a blend of entertainment and learning. About 40 exhibitors will be present.
"They're all hands-on activities," Dauer said.
Staff from local medical facilities will be doing height and weight checks and various nutrition and wellness activities.
Students from Minnesota State University-Mankato will teach children about dental care and nutrition.
If you think your son or daughter - or grandchild - has a great throwing arm, the local Kiwanis Club will be checking hurling speeds.
"The library will have information on its summer reading program, 'Paws to Read,' and the Martin County Humane Society will have pets to see," Dauer noted.
Likewise, local churches will share information about summer programs.
The new spring/summer CER catalog will debut, and those attending can ask questions or sign up for classes and activities listed in the directory.
With the upcoming Easter holiday, families might want to investigate exhibitors featuring hidden Easter eggs.
Weather permitting, the Fairmont Fire Department will have its ladder truck in the east parking lot. Always a popular feature at the fair, the truck provides great photo opportunities.
The city of Fairmont exhibit will be "A Window on the Life of a Plant." This will involve planting bean seeds in a plastic greenhouse, Dauer explained.
Other activities include hula hoops and jumping rope, bird art, emotions awareness bingo, an "eye spy" sensory table, sand play and super silly science.
All the busyness at the fair the will create appetites, and food will be available.
A slice of pizza, cookie, choice of carrot or banana and a beverage option will be sold for $3. The food service is a fundraiser for Fairmont Early Childhood Family Education/School Readiness, which co-sponsors the fair with CER.
Admission to the fair remains $8 per family or $4 per person.
