REDWOOD FALLS - Junior guard Sam Pendleton erupted for a game-leading 42 points to power the Class 2A, No. 7-ranked Redwood Valley Cardinals to a 97-83 nonconference basketball victory over the No. 5-ranked Fairmont Cardinals on Thursday night in Redwood Falls.
Taquez Perkins contributed 19 points to the hometown lineup's winning cause as Redwood Valley blistered the nets on 39 of 58 shots from 2-point range for 69 percent.
Redwood Valley also made 10 of 19 shots from 3-point territory for 53 percent, while sinking 9 of 12 free throws for 75 percent.
Senior forward Josh Eversman scored 25 points and garnered five rebounds to pace Fairmont's cause, while senior point guard Mitch Pfingsten tossed in 24 points and distributed five assists.
Luke Becker netted 12 points, Jay Ruen scored nine points and grabbed six boards, while Nick Roggow delivered six points for the visiting Cardinals.
Fairmont connected on 32 of 59 shots from 2-point distance for 54 percent, hit 7 of 23 behind the 3-point arc for 30 percent and sank 12 of 18 free throws for 67 percent.
Redwood Valley held a 50-46 halftime lead before outscoring Fairmont by a 47-37 margin in the second half.
No. 1-seeded Fairmont (20-4) opens the Section 3AA, South Sub-Section quarterfinals by playing host to No. 8-seeded Luverne at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.
Redwood Valley (19-4), the No. 1 seed in the Section 3AA, North Sub-Section tournament, plays host to Southwest Conference opponent Jackson County Central at 7:30 p.m. tonight in a regular-season game in Redwood Falls.
Redwood Valley edged Fairmont in B-squad action, 73-66, Thursday night in Redwood Falls.
Walker Tordsen scored 19 points to top the visiting Cardinals, while Tyler Tennyson produced 18 points and four assists.
Jack Waletich collected 12 points and distributed five assists for Fairmont, while Kale Fritz chipped in nine points.
